Whoopsie! Inhofe Tells Two Sharply Different Versions Of Story About Hillary "Fixing" Talk Radio

Oh, this is fun. Thank you, Senator Inhofe, for the endless entertainment today!

As you know, Inhofe made a bunch of news today by alleging on the radio that he overheard Hillary and Barbara Boxer saying they want a "legislative fix" for talk radio. This story was broken by Drudge "collaborator" Andrew Breitbart today in a TV "exclusive."

But here's what's funny. He told a second version of the story today on Fox News. And, well, let's just say that the two versions are not exactly in sync with one another.

Here's version number one, the one broken by Breitbart:

Inhofe said:

I was going over to vote the other day, and I was walking with two very liberal gals -- they didn't pay any attention to me being with them -- and they were outraged by something that you said, or Rush Limbaugh said. Somebody said something that upset 'em. They said, "We've got to do something about this. These are nothing but far right wing extremists. We've got to have a balance. There's gotta be a legislative fix to this."

Inhofe went on to confirm that the two Senators were Hillary and Boxer. So, in this version, Inhofe overheard this "the other day."

Version number two after the jump. Enjoy!

And...here's Inhofe in version number two, with Neil Cavuto this afternoon:

Here's the funny thing Neil, I've told this story well over 100 times on the radio, on TV, in the last three years. I was going up the elevator with them, this is about three years ago, to vote. And they are yelling and screaming and complaining about right wing radio, they're all right wing we can't let 'em keep doing thhat. There's gotta be a fix to this..."

And he repeats a few more times that this happened "three years ago."

So...did this happen "the other day," or "three years ago"? Maybe "the other day" can mean "three years ago." But it sure seems unlikely that it happened "three years ago" -- if Inhofe had been telling this story for all this time, think we might have heard about it?

So what's the deal here? Maybe the episode occurred twice? Or maybe it never happened at all?

Who knows?

Who cares?

Happy weekend!

Update: Taylor Marsh does a nice job laying out the broader context for all this.

Greg, evolution is just a comma to James Inhofe.

Happy weekend to you too.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. There was a big market for Al Franken's book with that title.
He makes this shit up, just like the statement that the Weather Channel is trying to increase its ratings with scary stories about global warming.
What an idiot.

user-pic

Well, to Inhofe

3 years = 3 days in "bible time"

Or so he thinks.

user-pic

A senile dementia would explain a lot about Inhofe.

user-pic

Sorry for the hair splitting, but when are political centrists considered "very liberal"?

Then again, I'm reminded of the source and his audience.

James Inhofe...can be described (explained) in three words: CUPIDITY, STUPIDITY, AND LACK OF LUCIDITY.

user-pic

I think I have discovered the source of the global warming problem.

user-pic

Inhofe was riding his dinosaur to work one day, and he fell off, and hit his head, hard.

He's never been the same since.

user-pic

"So what's the deal here?"

Off his meds again. Or is it still off his meds.

This is the schmuck who invited science fiction writer Michael Crichton to advise the Environment and Public Works Committee on global warming.

Someone ought to start a Senate Hall of Shame. Most of the probable inductees have served in the past 12 years.

Inhofe would be among the first group of inductees.

SeeDee
Dial back to the Oklahoma City Murrah Building bombing by rightwing-nut militia type Tim McVeigh in April 19, 1995.

Just before noon, about three hours after the bombing, when it was known to everyone with a grain of sense and compassion that the death toll was high (it totalled 168, finally), a reporter asked Sen. Inhofe if he was aware of the number of casualties.

Inhofe's flippant response: "It probably depends on how many were 'playing hooky' today."

That he's been re-elected after displaying that kind of callous attitude is a gauge of the Rethugnican attitudes that prevail in idyllic OKLAHOMA!...where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.....

yeah..

"Sorry for the hair splitting, but when are political centrists considered 'very liberal'?"

Well, I'd call Barbara Boxer a thoroughgoing liberal. That's why I like her.

Hillary, no.

Sorry, the software seems to be misbehaving. I'm not usually that repetitive.

3 days or 3 years, Imhoff and all republicans should be worried because in talk radio America, Democrats can't frame an outhouse.

until progressives recognize the importance of the right wing talk radio machine in shaping American opinion and pass legislation to cut the monopoly they will continue strategizing and framing in a vacuum.

this bush disaster, this occupation of iraq, and total innaction on global warming would not have been possible without the right wing's talk radio monopoly.

while liberals have been listening to music and political strategists and media critics have been reading, the talk radio monopoly enabled by reagan's abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine has been destroying democracy.

it has enabled a small minority to take over all three branches of govt and even now after the 06 elections it still allows the GOP to completely control the debate.

as a propaganda tool it is more effective than print and TV where, except for obviously partisan TV and print outlets, there is still some accountability.

talk radio as a propaganda tool it is significantly more effective. on talk radio there is no accountability. most conservative talk show hosts screen their calls carefully to exclude challenges. it allows levels of unaccountable repetition not possible in any other medium. much of it's audience is also semi-captive. sure, you can always change the station or turn it off. but in many parts of the country there are no alternatives for those who are interested in current events or politics and want to get it while working or driving and before going home to relax and fight the family for the remote.

more than 20% of Americans have said they get their news from talk radio. that is what makes the red states red. that is bush's base.

but talk radio is bigger than that because of the trickle-up effect it has on the rest of the media.

by the time the evening TV talking heads discuss an issue the GOP flaks and politicians know they can be certain that the taking points they use will have already been repeatedly jammed into the ears of tens of millions of americans all over the country.

the lies, the excuses for bush, the whinning, the fearmongering, the hate and racism, the threats and insults to citizens and journalists and politicians working for truth and justice-

with their total debate control, the excuses for bush, and the on-demand threats from the dittoheads, talk radio is why democrats can't turn enough GOP reps for veto proof legislation.

truth carries a lot of weight in a democracy and without that twenty years of talk radio monopoly we could have bypassed many of the problems presented by corporate media ownership.

All,

As much as I feel like the talk radio righties are misinformed jerks... the last thing we need is a "legislative fix" for something that really is a free speech issue.

I'd hate for Republicans to come back and try to regulate political speech on the Web. And some conservatives have already attempted to use cmpaign finance regs to try, remember.

This is sort of amusing, and yet the "legislative fix" theme kept getting repeated on MSNBC and Fox Noise last night.

In that sense, we can laugh all we want about Inhofe, but we're the only ones getting the joke.

Nikto -- Your comment is just too funny. Just started reading this thread and LMAO at this -- just visualizing yaknow. Thanks for my first laugh of the day (and it's only 0315 in the AM).

Ah well. what do you expect from someone like this? Coming from the area where they buried a brand-new 1957 Plymouth on the courthouse lawn 50 years ago, and actually expected it to be in some type of operable condition when it was excavated a week or so ago.
For the latest results, check out www.buriedcar.com and THEN decide if he warrants serious consideration!! Yep, SeeDee, it's: Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooklahoma!! Where the wind comes sweeping down the plains.........
