Quote Of The Day
"The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office."
--Sally Quinn, in a column today in The Washington Post entitled "A GOP Plan To Oust Cheney." Of course, Quinn doesn't quote anyone actually saying this. But as Steve Benen notes, Quinn is the "social director of the Georgetown cocktail circuit," meaning that "if Quinn is writing about it, Republicans in DC are talking about it." So it's at least possible that there's something here.

If you read the WaPo profile of Cheney it's clear his agenda isn't in anybody's idea of our country's best interests. He's got to go.

Quinn is full of it, and symptomatic of what is wrong with DC. It's just a game to her and many. How about some real news?

There is NOTHING there. This is a Sally Quinn column for chrissakes! I'm sure there has been some chitty-chatty in her Georgetown salon about that uncouth ruffian Cheney, but the idea that the GOP will actually move against him is so laughable. The column is simply just a set-up to tout the charms and virtues of one of her favorite cocktail guests, Fred Thompson.

So, while the Post is publishing articles implying (if not outright saying) that Cheney is the one in control, one of their columnists is saying that the Republicans want to oust him?
He'd never let it happen. And if Bush won't cast Fredo aside, there's no way in hell he'd dump Dick.

Even if there is any genuine basis for such inane speculation, it seems such sentiment would be too little and too late to change most voters' minds about the utter ineptitude of GOP governance.
Can ANYONE really picture 'W' OK'ing Dick's ouster? Sounds like a comedy routine...

Republicans are gun-toting folk. They take their rabid dogs out behind the wood shed and put them down properly. Hell, they woulda done to the Dark Sethlord Chainy already sept'n thar 'fraid that the children would cry like they did when they watched "Old Yeller" decades ago.

Quinn's speculation that Fred Thompson could replace Cheney is interesting in that the annointed one has tapped Cheney's daughter Liz to advise him on foriegn policy and Mary Matlin is also on board. Stephen Hayes wrote approvingly in the Weekly Standard that other FP advisors on the team are considered hawks on "National Security".
Fred Thompson could be a logical choice for the VP slot.

I believe anyone appointed to replace Cheney, would have to first be appointed after Cheney resigns, and second, would require senate confirmation. Surely no one could believe that Cheney will resign under any circumstance, and I certainly hope that the Democratic senate would not approve of anyone to replace him who would be expected to be physically capable of running for President in 2008. This is, as said by so many, a non-story.

Has everyone gone completely insane?
The Republican party never eats it's own. NEVER. It took virtually pornographic text and email messages to underage boys going public before Republicans even began to take action regarding Florida Rep. Mark Foley. They knew about that crap for years and did nothing...zilch. And even when they were forced to deal with it publicly, they had FOX News label him a Democrat in it's coverage.
The good'ole boys club within that party are not about to rock the boat or begin casting stones because they each have more skeletons then the Natural History museum. And besides that...blind, unwavering, unquestioned, loyalty are demanded of all Republicans (they may or may not have signed in actual blood). They would rather let national security secrets slip to an adversary or a fellow politician commit criminal acts with minors than finger the guilty party if they were a Republican. And if they do have to deal with them it will be done quietly, many months later out of sight and mind, and they'll find a way to blame the entire thing on the Democrats. It's the formula upon which they took Washington and it's the formula they plan to use to do it again.
Cheney is going nowhere because this party would rather an ass and a fool running the show then to "look weak" or "look disorganized". And that's a fact.

Sally Quinn is the grand dame of Washington cocktail party circuit, which in case you haven’t noticed has been dominated, like DC itself for years by Republicans. If she says Repubs are looking for a way to ease Dick out and replace him you can bet there’s some fire behind that smoke.
She's not talking Republican party nonentities like rightwing bloggers or voters in her article. She's talking about big money donors (see that article about CEOs going to Hillary and Obama in droves) and politicians who know they'll drown if they keep standing on the deck of Captain Cheney's USS Iraq yelling the ship isn't sinking.
With McConnell and Lugar making noises about pulling the plug on Dick’s favorite war he may not want to be around for the final act. OTH Cheney is a "warrior" and he’ll most likely fight to the last breath of the Republican party.
Despite what Atrios says the ground is shifting behind the scenes. Repubs know they have to change their electoral prospects or go the way of the whigs. That means at least winding down our occupation of Iraq and possibly dumping it's architect.
