Quote Of The Day

"We need a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time."

-- John Edwards, quoted by ABC News talking about his qualifications at a news conference today. Well, it's a start, anyway.

It's a shame one has to actually state this as a basic requirement but there it is and I totally agree. Eat pretzels too!

user-pic

...without choking...

user-pic

Is the mark of a qualified president to be Conqueror of Broccoli? Should there be pretzel eating as part of all debates?

Edwards is running against W? I know he's a lawyer, but maybe someone should remind him of the 22nd Amendment.

Ironically, that was the one (and only) bar that the Repos thought Bush could actually meet.

Wrong...

jcflynn: "Edwards is running against W?" It's worth watching the interview with Iowa Press (or reading the transcript once they have posted it). It's extremely positive and substantive, focused on issues and what he thinks should be done. He manages to get through pretty much everything without slamming or even mentioning Bush.

It's only when he's asked, more than once, about charges that Democrats are too soft to deal with security that he even hints at Bush. The first time he's asked, he says that if you think the war is going well and you're safer, by all means vote for one of the Republicans, because they'll keep things going that way for four more years.  And it's many, many minutes later, when he's asked again if terrorism has to be the top priority, he offers the quote. He simply says that of course it's the priority, since America has to exist, but he thinks a president can walk and chew gum at the same time. I don't see how one can flaw his rhetoric.

Of course, one should always be prepared for the Cheney/Bush junta (thank you Gore Vidal) to invent some "war on terror" related issue that will force them to continue in office.

Tom

user-pic

Of course terrorism is not the top priority, and it hasn't been for the Bush administration either. It is a great campaign tool, able to engender terror in the hearts of voters everywhere. (Hey, isn't that terrorism too?)

That's why I'm supporting Ron Paul.

As a Liberal I can agree with some of the Libertarian agenda in how they see Government's role, but I wouldn't want one as President. Ron Paul is a Libertarian, and as such, he does not support; Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, nor any number of other agencies that "regulate" business or administer social programs.

user-pic

I quite sure Edwards is aware who he is running against, anyone who is a sold out sock puppet of the corporate esablishment does well to have the independence to chew gum and walk.

And…

Yes he certainly is a lawyer and a damned good one who made a lot of cash taking on the best money can buy and beating them on behalf of the powerless who would have been screwed victims of the system without him. He earned his money the hard way and had to be the brightest in the room to do so. Personally, I like the idea of a man who knows how to take on powerful corporations and kick their butts. He can advocate for me against them from the White House anytime.

The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.

Terrorism has become the mother's milk of Republicans, Republican lites, crooked contractors amoral PR types and other assorted denizens of DC. I'd rather defend myself from terrorists than have my way of life, money and rights swept from under me by a gang of conniving thieves in Brooks Brothers suits.

user-pic

When I was about 18, I was not just a libertarian, but one who stayed up for over 48 hours straight, reading Atlas Shrugged, and, for the next few months, tormenting people with "Who is John Galt"? A few years later, I got my first date with my first wife because I was the only person at the party (Young Republican) who knew what a Libertarian was.

As I aged, and realized I would never get a date with Dagny Taggart or Dominique Francon, I began to give credence to those who actually knew Ayn Rand and found her interesting and insane.

At this point, I'm glad to have Ron Paul stirring up things, challenging the status quo. I don't see him becoming a third-party spoiler, but I like the questions he asks, even if I don't like his proposed answers.

Actually the inability to chew gum and walk at the same time was an invective hurled at Gerald Ford by the Dems touting Carter. It was meaningless tripe.

Then again, Carter won and to this day we continue to enthrone presidents whose primary qualification amounts to having more effective meaningless tripe going for them than their opponents' meaningless tripe.

user-pic

What good is a President who can jog and chew gum at the same time if he's not a sexy, broad-shouldered hunk like Mitt/Hollywood Fred?

user-pic

Howard, Dennis Kucinich asks good questions too. :-)

user-pic

The more questions, the better, especially if anyone comes up with an answer.

It's ironic that Ford, a college all-American in football and later an expert-slope skiier, was probably the most athletically talented President. Sic transit gloria trippa. [sorry, I don't know the Latin for meaningless and I cheated with Italian]

"Sic transit gloria trippa."

Which reminds me of the old Reader's Digest story about the Monday that the Boston transit system had major problems - forcing the schools to close.

The newspaper headline, from a student's point of view, read as the following:

"Sick Transit - Glorious Monday."

the main reason why I'm supporting Ron Paul is because I keep learning new things from the man.

To boldly go...

user-pic

"The main reason why I'm supporting Ron Paul is because I keep learning new things from the man." That's what distinguishes libertarians from the GOP establishment. The latter thinks it never has to learn anything, while the libertarians are endlessly fascinated by how much they learn from libertarianism, a bit like how fundamentalists are always finding their faith surprisingly renewed. It's two sides of America's free market ideology, as a corporate entity and as a religious sect.

Howard,

"questions" in politics are all too often a weapon used by one party against another entity, party or individual. Incessant questions were the stock in trade by the right during the Clinton years. The answer to one question simply gave rise to another question. Its easy to get in front of the TV cameras and pontificate using questions, but the rub is, as you mentioned, finding answers.

The last time I checked the score, Questions were in the lead, 2,943, against the Answers, 2.

Howard, I agree, questions are good, they may make people think....ya think? :-)

user-pic

Why do you think questions are good? :-)

The last time that line was out there, we traded Ford for Carter. Not exactly an improvement (not least because he proved incapable of doing more than negotiate one hostage crisis at a time).

user-pic

Well, if you're more worried about terrorism than anything else, vote for any of the Republicans.
If you are more worried about cancer, your job, and not ending up in an crappy nursing home, vote Edwards.

Carter was right about so many things, including the energy crisis we are facing today.  If we had followed his lead, the oil company executives would be just like all our other successful company leaders, rather than multibillionairess (responsible for starting wars and gouging US consumers).  Who knows what the global warming situation would have been?

Ford was no smarter than Bush but not at all malevolent.

Now, Bush -->  How many crises has he STARTED? In medicine we have an acronym:  TNTC:  Too Many To Count.

Jan

"Well, if you're more worried about terrorism than anything else, vote for any of the Republicans."

Not really. Bush's idiotic policy took our eye off the ball, letting Osama escape, wasting our resources in Iraq, & not beefing up real security at our ports, nuclear power plants. If you're worried about our security (and we all should be) vote for a Democrat.

Tom

user-pic

Carter had some flaws when he was in power. He's been better out of power. He decared the Persian Gulf our security interest & Brezinski (Carter's National Security Advisor) is the one who started dealing with the mujahadeen.

Tom

user-pic

I see what you're saying DKC.

But when Edwards calls the war on terrorism a "Bumper sticker slogan," he isn't saying we don't need to deal with terrorism. He's saying that we aren't dealing with it or are not dealing with it effectively.

Edwards isn't soft on terrorism. He believes we should have an effective policy towards it, rather than a snappy slogan.

Unlike Bush and the other Republicans, Edwards realizes that invading every country in the Middle East is not the answer. He knows that, as we've previously dealt with criminal enterprises like the Italian mafia, that you have to be more subtle in your approach.

Is it just me or is John Edwards making more headlines over the substantive issues and ideas he is talking about on the campaign trail than the others? The headlines I see for Obama and Hillary are all strategy/horse race/backbiting headlines.

user-pic

DKC is offering a chioce of priorities; Edwards's very quote is denying that we need to make that choice.
