Obama Raps Bush On Stem-Cell Research Veto
And the first Dem Presidential candidate out of the box today in blasting President Bush for his veto of the measure promoting stem-cell research is...
...Barack Obama, who will soon send out the following statement:
By vetoing funding for stem cell research once again, the President is deferring the hopes of millions of Americans who do not have the time to keep waiting for the cure that may save or extend their lives. The promise that stem cells hold does not come from any particular ideology, it is the judgment of science, and we deserve a President who will put that judgment first and make this promise real for the American people.?
Update: Actually, Hillary hit Bush first this morning on this during her speech at the Take Back America conference:
"Now, this is research that…holds such promise for devastating diseases. Yesterday, I met with a group of children suffering from juvenile diabetes. I co-chair the Alzheimer's caucus in the Senate. I've worked on helping to boost funding for research to look for cures and a way to prevent so many devastating diseases. And we know that stem cell research holds the key to our understanding more about what we can do. So let me be very clear: When I am president, I will lift the ban on stem cell research."This is just one example of how the President puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families, just one more example of how out of touch with reality he and his party have become. And it's just one more example as to why we're going to send them packing in January 2009, and return progressive leadership to the White House."

The headline of this post should have also been updated to "Hillary and Obama Rap Bush on Stem Cell Veto". Otherwise, there's a pro-Obama slant in the most read portion of the post.
I find this happens a lot in the Election Central pages. A post is put up, a mistake is made, an update issued at the bottom, yet the original headline remains. And that's a shame because of our natural tendency to remember the headline and not the story.

Must be a slow day. Are Clinton's and Obama's remarks a surprise? This is a consensus issue amongst the Dems (and even independents).
As to cesar's remark, I think it's pretty much a given that no matter what venue or group doing the writing, Clinton will get screwed. I'm sure the campaign factors that in.
No, I don't generally think there is a conscious bias here at TPM even if it is a little less friendly to Clinton :o)

Just to let you know, I'm not a Hillary fan in the least bit. I'm a just a fan of fairness in journalism and candidate-bias disclosure when it's op-ed. The issue with blogs in general, and election central in particular is that the line between op-ed and journalism is completely blurred. If the goal of Election Central is to hold it up to professional journalism standards than the headline should be changed. If it's op-ed, then it's a different story, but Greg should probably tell us who is favorite candidate of the day is. The most dangerous form of op-ed is when it is passed as straight journalism.

The only solution to this issue is for Election Central to wait until the end of the day to post something. They (posters at Election Central) learn about events sequentially, not simultaneously, and unless they wait until the end of the day, something needs to go first, and then be updated.
And frankly, I don't see how anyone could view what is posted here as "straight journalism". Check out the headline for today's post on the Guiliani campaign replacing the South Carolina Republican in 24 hours. That headline is not straight journalism. There's clearly a bias that is present, and anyone who reads here on a regular basis knows that.

Why can't a post be updated as the information comes in? This normally is what happens. The problem is that the headline isn't always updated, nor is the blurb "Obama is the first out of the gate..." that appears on the main page. That's either laziness or intentional. It's really not any more complicated than that.
Like I said, if it's not pretending to be straight journalism, then Greg shouldn't pretend that he's impartial to the Obama campaign.
I have no problem with op-ed. Just be transparent about who you're rooting for when you write these posts.

By the way, this is relevant:
"But the reality is that such blanket criticism of the blogosphere is symptomatic of a larger refusal of mainstream news organization figures to acknowledge the growing legitimacy of the whole medium. The focus on "incivility" is misleading, perhaps willfully so -- it tars the blogosphere with one brush, it blurs the differences between the bad and good bloggers, and focuses public attention on "tone" while, again, refusing to acknowledge the substantive achievements on display.
You see this effort to deny the legitimacy of the medium express itself in other ways, too. For instance, mainstream media outlets steadfastly refuse to credit bloggers when they've broken legitimate stories. Rather, the big news orgs frequently pick up stories and say that the news "first surfaced on the Internet" -- without naming the actual blogger or bloggers who did the work.
Is this blanket effort to deny the blogosphere's legitimacy conscious? Not always. I think it's frequently rooted in the fact that many establishment media figures are aging and schooled in an older tradition of journalism, and simply aren't yet mentally prepared to appreciate the growing journalistic professionalism of bloggers.
But it's high time for mainstream media commentators, reporters and executives to wake up and seriously recognize that very big changes are happening. Bloggers are beginning more and more to see themselves as journalists. They're getting more and more obsessed with accuracy. They're getting more and more skillful at backing up their opinions with reporting and research. Simply put, they're investing more and more in that ultimate of journalistic goals: Getting it right." -Greg Sargent, June 9, 2006

Do you know that it wasn't, in this case?
And I think you're absolutely right about the headlines being updated--that's fair.
I think Greg is partial towards Democrats. I don't get a strong sense that he's partial towards Obama, though.

Did you read my original post? This whole thread was predicated on updating the headline. The body was updated, but the headline wasn't.
So I we're in agreement on the main point.

Yes, I did read the original, when you commented only about the headline. But when you say "Why can't the post be updated?" I interpreted that to mean the whole body, not just the headline. And that's what the question was referring to--not the headline issue.
