Gingrich: GOP Nominee Must Break Sharply With Bush
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said today that any nominated for the Republican ticket will have to break sharply with the Bush Administration: "If the Republicans run a stand-pat presidential candidate who ends up being on defense for all of September and October and who is seen by the country as representing four more years, the fact is that Republicans are not going to" win, Gingrich told the American Enterprise Institute.

At a campaign stop in a New Hampshire bookstore, John Edwards was asked a question about animal-rights group PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Damnit Edwards, I'm trying so hard to like you, but this is one of those 'moron or liar?' moments.

So is Newty going to declare his candidacy in late September as an antiwar candidate? Sure that sounds like wingnut heresy and Republican suicide right now but how else do you break with Bush?

We old pharts call it a "senior moment."
Why would he lie?
Most encouraging to us relics that even very bright youngsters like Edwards stumble occasionally.
BTW it is possible Edwards hasn't heard of PETA. I betcha a survey could turn up some who had never heard of Paris Hilton. What a delight it would be to have more people like that around.

The Worst Food in Oregon (that is the actual name of one of the longest-surviving private restaurants in the state) has dead cow as well as dead chicken on the menu.
Years ago a reporter for The Wall Street Journal reported they could never be sued for false advertising for claiming the Worst Food in Oregon. He asked for a recommendation from the chef. The recommendation: eat somewhere else.
Just a footnote FYI.

PETA -- "People Eating Tasty Animals"
This band of losers sued (and won) a suit against a businessman who put up a web site mocking them with that slogan. They won the lawsuit, got the web domain and legal costs. They tried to stick the guy for about 3 times what it actually cost them but the judge wasn't buying.
Their self-righteous, self-serious attitude, coupled with their attempt to turn a profit on their victim by lying about their legal costs, made them permanently a object of contempt to me.
My best friend is a vegan; I and my family had KFC tonight. No place for him in either version of that org. He and I have shared many happy meals over the 15 or so years he hasn't partaken of flesh. That batch of stop-eared louts could take a lesson.
Thanks.

Maybe...but Edwards is what, in his mid-fifties?
It's just amazing to me that people who presumably have a strong, general interest in politics (also political/ethical ideas, one would hope) could be that insulated and clueless. It's not like Edwards has spent his entire adult life in Congress, speaking proceedural jargon and only seeing average people at choreographed visits to the district.
On the other hand, I could see how a guy who grew up in a traditional, rural community -- and who now needs to appeal to a broad swath of voters -- wouldn't have much use for a group like PETA.
Personally, I think PETA are right on principle, but wrong on strategy. Using animal products, including meat, is so engrained in our culture; eschewing those things consistently is too much for most people (myself included); an absolutist approach is especially hard to sustain. Harangueing people just gives them an excuse to tune you out and return to indulging themselves. There's too much dissonance between people needing to feel ok about themselves, their habits, and learning how the animals they consume are mistreated. So they ignore it, or explain it away with facile rationalizations. Some people can make the complete switch immediately, but most need to move very incrementally. And generally, the more they feel pressured, the more stubborn they become.

I like dead chickens too, and often feel that PETA are setting back their cause by the way they behave. But I regret to say that KFC (part of the noxiously named YumBrands, if believe) treat their workers -- and their chickens especially poorly. In contributions and corporate conduct, they're GOP all the way.

Don't be so gullible. The media is branding Edwards as "far left." Edwards is uninformed about PETA - WooHoo! - certain to win him points in the south.

Gingrich is stealing John Edwards points! LOL

If Edwards pretended he'd never heard of PETA in order to score points with culturally conservative Southerners...well, it wouldn't shock me, but it wouldn't exactly impress me either. Why couldn't he have accomplished the same thing by simply saying, "treating animals humanely is a good thing; but, they're completely opposed to eating meat and I don't support that".

Because that would have been gaffe free.
I like Edwarda a lot in terms of what I know about his policies as of now, but he's shown a frightening ability to make the wrong political moves in the last few months that worries me in terms of his viability. I know that $400 haircuts, $50,000 poverty speeches, working at a hedge fund, and positioning one's self as the progressive left's candidate but not knowing about PETA (and yes, I know, not all liberals are animal rights activists, but come on) are not reasons his policies are bad, but they do scream to me that he may be a sitting duck for the GOP's machine in 2008.
