GOP's Choice Against Dem Rep. Chris Carney Will Not Run
Remember Tom Marino? He's the U.S. Attorney from Pennsylvania who was on the firing short list and was viewed by national Republicans as perhaps the most promising challenger to Dem Rep. Chris Carney of Pennsylvania.
Well, Carney can rest easy -- for now, anyway. Marino has told national Republicans that he's taking a pass on the race.

Probably great news for Carney, considering that his standing in the progressive blogosphere has taken a real hit recently.

And well deserved... having a fundraiser headed by Richard Perle... Happily working in Douglas Feith's mis-information sell "Attack Iraq" team -- How did Actblue miss this?

Um maybe because Carney quit working for Doug Feith and ran for congress as an antiwar Dem?

And you believed him?
Especially when Richard Perle was fundraising for him...?

Hmmm sounds like the blowback from the US Atty scandal is starting to reverberate at the local level. Folks, who served the GOP have had their eyes opened with the total politicization of the US Justice department. Folks may like winning and playing hardball but they have little stomach for it being exposed publically and consequently they have to endure the personal smears rather than the venal veneer of integrity, ethics and respect they project. Rachal Paulose in MN is in for a real eye opener, just like Tim Griffin. Shinning a spotlight on what you actually stand for and represent can shatter illusions and aspirations once you know that what you are repesenting is a sham and disgrace making your actions wholly unconcionable.

Wasn't Tim Griffin unable to land a job with any top law firm, and wound up in Thompson's campaign? Is that what you mean?
That whole standing ovation thing in front of Paulose must have been pretty embarassing, I would think.

Carney voted with the Dem majority on HR 1591, the bill Edwards wanted Dems to send back time and time again. He also voted for HR 2206 like 85 other Dems in the House. Being an ex-soldier he probably has friends he doesn't want to see get killed in a rout
out of Iraq led by that brilliant strategist George Bush. Like over 60% of the American public (and probably a smaller percentage in his redneck district) he probably wants to see an orderly end to the war in Iraq.
There's lots of positions I don't agree with him on but keep in mind he's light years better than the mistress strangler he beat or any other candidate we're likely to get in PA-10. You're dreaming if you think we can get a Woolsey or Kucinich elected up there.
If you have a problem with him then take it up with MY DD, Kos and Atrios who all raised money for him.

I also noticed he voted AGAINST the defazio and andrews amendments requiring Bush to come back to Congress before attacking pre-emptively Iran.
Also, even when the supplemental bill was split into pork and iraq spending he voted for BOTH!

So I'm not so convinced he such an anti-war guy.
I just want to know how or why they missed this profile/backgrounder on Carney -- did they? I certainly would have liked to know this guy's history, training, and experience before giving money to the guy.

They didn't miss anything. Howie Klein wrote ablog post about how Carney basically lied to him. Howie and Co. took him at his word, and Carney stabbed them in the back. So Howie wrote and asked for the money back. ActBlue won't raise any money any more for Carney.

I have no doubt he lied to them... but did they research his background? Did they release his background?
I admit == I didn't know then what I know now about Carney... but I wasn't heading ActBlue.

Nice of you to repeat Republican talking points Sand. HR 2207 isn't pork.
You can go back in the archives at Kos, My DD and Atrios to look up why they backed Carney and see if the did any due diligence. They supported just as many stinky Dems as Rahm and the DCCC so I'm sure it was all about winning the House as it should be. I can't stand most of the stuff Murtha stands for either. But he's one of ours as is Carney. If we keep 'em on a short leash and they vote with the majority 90% of the time I'm happy. It's sure better than having John Boehner setting the House agenda. And that's what will happen if we think we can primary every a-hole who doesn't have the right friends or vote our way 100% of the time.

That is a false choice.
First of all, Dems, despite their political ineptitude, are going to have the zeitgeist on their side for a good 8-10 years because of Bush.
Second, we don't need to primary 'every' ahole. We need to primary MOST aholes. Ahole Dems that run in 'safe' districts DESERVE to be primaried (Ellen Tauscher, Jane Harman and DOZENS more). They've had a hand in this Iraq/Bush disaster and they deserve what they get.
Finally, presenting activists with this kind of false choice is a recipe for defeat. The only way we are going to save this country from bankruptcy, class-warfare and imperial decline is if we elect a set of Democrats who are willing to uproot entrenched interests. That means that for the time being, primaries should be encouraged.

Yes. Also, she is a political partisan appointment she was a good buddy of Monica Goodling.

If you can primary them and win the nomination and the general then I'm all for it. But if you can't, and in Carney's case I don't think you can - because I've been up there in his district and it's very conservative - then it's better to go after people like Harmon who's district might be more progressive than she is.
I think Carney is about as liberal as we're going to get in PA-10 and if whats-his-name didn't get sued by his mistress for assaulting her he'd still probably be in office.
