Tommy Thompson: Whoops! I Accidentally OK'd Anti-Gay Discrimination
Yesterday's GOP debate did offer one moment worth noting that truly was a rare occasion: A Republican said he was all for legal discrimination against gays — but then quickly backed off and apologized for it. More after the jump.
The candidate was Tommy Thompson. Last night he was asked by debate moderator Chris Matthews if private business owners should be able to fire gay employees. Thompson's answer: "I think that is left up to the individual business. I really sincerely believe that that is an issue that business people have got to make their own determination as to whether or not they should be."
But now Thompson is saying that he never meant to say any such thing, the Associated Press reports. He claims he misunderstood the question, and did not mean to approve of discrimination after all. "I made a mistake. I misinterpreted the question," Thompson said. "I didn't hear, I didn't hear the question properly and I apologize." It's unclear, of course, just how he might have misheard such a clear-cut question — and then responded with a seemingly clear-cut answer. What did he think was actually being said?
Either way, this is not Thompson's first gaffe in this campaign — he previously apologized for an intended compliment of Jews, in which he said that making money is a "part of the Jewish tradition." And now he has managed to offend every side on the gay rights issue: Those who disapprove of discrimination, plus those who approve of discrimination and won't like that he backed off of supporting it.

The misunderstanding is simple. By "gay," Thompson thought the AP reporter meant "happy."
Really, it's not the government's place to tell private business owners that they can't fire employees who are annoyingly cheery and say things like "Uh oh, looks like somebody's got a case of the Mondays!"

The big question is...what about the NINE other wingnuts standing onstage, NONE of whom objected to this un-American expression of hate.
They all stood there, did not interrupt or object. EVERY SINGLE ONE of them agreed with what Thompson now disavows.

Why would anyone expect a GOPer to say anything else? Screaming about "special rights" for gays is the glue that holds their party together.

"Screaming about 'special rights' for gays is the glue that holds their party together." On top of that, it's also about a restriction on private enterprise and what it can do to its labor. This isn't a party whose religious beliefs include disavowing regulation of business.

Am I the only one who finds it bizarre that there are three Republicans running for President who DON'T BELIEVE IN EVOLUTION? How can we expect a party this backward to ever acknowledge gay rights?

Well, no, but you have to understand that in order to believe in evolution you have to have evolved. Republicans are still in the Stone Age, evolutionarily speaking.

Your post shows how low my expectations of Republicans are: I was encouraged that only 3 raised their hands for creationism. I thought there would be the near-unanimity that we saw on the issue of gay-bashing. More seriously, having watched the Dem debate the previous week, I thought the big take away was that, as a field -- and considering only candidate skills and not subtance or ideology -- the Democrats are far stronger than the Republicans this year. The Republicans seem very out of touch stylistically with where the country is.

Dare we hope for a general election battle between Tommy Thompson and Joe Biden? I mean, if the country is going to hell anyway, the least we could do is get a few laughs out of it.

Based on his track record, Tommy's possibly the most gay friendly of the Republican candidates, his latest fauxpas noitwithstanding. I warned him not to hire Reggie White as campaign speechwriter.
