New Winger Attack: John Edwards Could Be Our "First Woman President"
It looks as if Ann Coulter's "faggot" insult of John Edwards has set the tone for a new right-wing taunt: That John Edwards could become our "First Woman President." Check out this screen grab of Rush Limbaugh pushing the new smear:
Rush's diatribe above was inspired by an article yesterday in the conservative New York Sun entitled, "Could Edwards Become First Woman President?." The artice quoted abortion rights activist and Edwards backer Kate Michelman saying that Edwards "understands the reality of women's lives."
The Sun then suggested that her praise for Edwards on women's issues is "provoking debate" that Edwards may soon lay claim to the title of "First Woman President," and to attack Michelman and the Edwards campaign for pushing such an argument. The kicker: Neither Michelman nor the Edwards camp were ever quoted actually making any such point.
Nevertheless, Rush picked up on the article and said:
So John Edwards is on tap now, according to one of the nation's largest abortion rights supporters to become the first woman president in the United States — and, of course, the barrier is down. The first black president, Bill Clinton. That barrier is broken. Sometimes all you can do is laugh at these people. Speaking of the Breck Girl ...
Here we go ...
I know this remark is contentious and folks will not like it. But I am only making a query. While we all hate stereotypes, the reason they exist is because at bottom they are based on some actions/behavior which is being grossly and maliciously distorted.
What is it about Edwards that he may have done or said that elicited the very specific type of vile and vicious attack by Coulter and how did he become a feminized caricature in this article?
This article picks up on the same theme of Edwards somehow not being 'manly'. What is going on here?

Well dang, his hair does not look as good as Jimmy Johnson the ex-Dallas Cowboys coach. Talk about a Alberto VO5 look, he has it. Gorgeous head of hair. So did that US Atty, from WA, who testified ...but Edwards hair,...ain't all that.
Edwards does have beautiful facial features for a man.

Oh please. Can you please give me a break? Is this really the first comment from a TPMCafe member? Talk about self defeating. Look: the GOP feminizes every Democratic candidate. They made Gore into a chortling, chubby dork. Kerry was French. And now Edwards is a woman. Are you trying to tell me that Republicans are actually on to something in any of these cases?
It's horseshit. But more importantly, they do it over and over again. There is no secret something about Edwards that makes him vulnerable to this stuff. It's GOP Smears 101.
I mean, what do you think the whole "Obama isn't black enough" smear is about? Edwards is a regular guy. He does have effeminate characteristics - he's clean, he smiles a lot, he's pretty, he's soft spoken, he's got a childlike innocent charm about him (even if he's neither childlike or innocent). He doesn't have that bravado, machismo (real or imitation) that you see in many Presidential contenders.
I liked Edwards in 04, and I still think he's a good guy. However, he lost me in 04 when he got all giddy at 'not following the rules' during his debate with Cheney. He suddenly looked like a middle-schooler, and far from presidential.
His candidacy announcement this year seemed awkward. Like he was unsure of himself a bit. And maybe that's what the Right is chasing is Edwards' appearance of insecurity. I think it may be an act devised for the courtroom that he's trying to carry over, but 'soft touch' doesn't play well in Presidential races.
I'd take Edwards and Obama over Hillary any day.

Call it what it is. This is misogyny, and it's as much anti-woman as it is anti-Edwards. Maybe even more. Edwards' isn't getting hit like thus just because he has boyish looks (boyish, not girlish). He's getting hit because he is speaking about issues that appeal to women, and because women are responding favorably.

Um, no. These stereotypes did not elicit the vile slur Coulter used against Gore and Kerry...they were both portrayed as nerdy, intellectuals. Not quite the same as the slur used by Coulter. Nor the feminization.
No. I simply did not get where they were drawing the inference from. Take the examples of Gore and Kerry you used. I could clearly see that Gore was a dork for his 'internet' comment that was distorted, and Kerry was French, based on his totally cosmopolitan and urbane manner. That was clear. What wasn't clear was what was behind the slurs about Edward.
Not exactly. White America's perception of blacks is about 50 cents vs. an Andrew Young or Will Smith. However, there is nothing feminizing about being portrayed as a ganster or criminal as opposed to an erudite intellectual. It seems you see feminization in all stereotypes, I don't.
Being a bitch is about being mean and vicious and using power to hammer others. It is not about being butch.
Bottomline, I like Edwards and just wanted to know what was contributing to this 'girlyman' meme.

The John Edwards hair thing is nothing new. In 2004 there were winger trolls posting on The Nation's blogs calling him "Silky Pony". Last month I saw the epithet used by Chicago Tribune right-wing columnist John Kass. It must be going around in the right wing comentariat. It's not enough to attack him on the substance of his positions, so they do ad-hominem attacks on his hair.

Perhaps feminization isn't the perfect word for the GOP treatment of Gore and Kerry. Emasculation is probably better. The reason Kerry was smeared as a vascillating, over-intellectualized Frenchie was to deflate his image as a war hero. Esmasculate him. Make him seem like less of man. Make him seem like less of a leader. Meanwhile, GWB, who never served a day in the military, was puffed up as a man's man, who "you'd want to have a beer with."
You seem to have gotten my point about Obama exactly backwards. They are saying Obama is "not black enough" as a way to emasculate him because he doesn't fit the black stereotype. The black pimp/gangsta is an ultra macho image. The GOP, by calling Obama "not black enough" is saying that he is not macho, not gangsta, not a pimp. He is, according to the GOP, someone like Gore or Kerry -- not quite a "woman," but certaintly an over-intellectualized, ivory tower nerd. Not a man's man, like GW or Captain Guiliani. Why do you think they focused so closely on that picture of Obama with his shirt off at the beach?
The hard right routinely accuses Hillary of being a lesbian. And plenty of women will tell you that acting like a man by being assertive or demanding or forceful automatically earns the "bitch" label. I'm not sure where your definition for "bitch" came from, on the other hand.

I think it's possible that while all the media attention is on Obama & Clinton (who will split the black vote), Edwards will end up with the nomination.
The Repubs are scared of that and are thus concentrating on destroying Edwards.

I think this is a classical 'framing' attack, as outlined by linguist George Lakoff. The Republicans are appealing to the voters who like patriarchal, 'strict father' family figures as their leaders, and so they try to frame Democrats as 'weak fathers', 'lesbian mothers', etc. NEVER MIND that GW Bush is a failure as a father, as long as the media goes along with the 'frame', ...

A) Don't give narrative opportunity to get traction
- ignore
B) In the case that it gets traction deal with it (risking giving it further traction)
- ridicule the taunt or taunter as laughable
- send your henchman out to deal with the taunter
- pick a fight with and vanquish the taunter or better-yet the gang leader of the taunter.
or C) claim this distracts from the more important narrative at stake (rarely an option in school :-(

No, I did not get your point backwards, what you are asserting was the point of the meme 'not black enough' is backwards. The stereotype of blacks does not emasculate Obama nor does it feminize him. Rather, the point was an attempt to get the black community whose votes are crucial in Democratic races, to not vote for Obama on the basis of race. There were attempting to dissociating him from his 'blackness'. There is nothing whatsoever, feminizing, or 'womanly' about a person 'not being black enough'. So, you have this backwards. The reason they focus on the picture of Obama without his shirt is to perpetuate the Mandingo stereotype of the black male.
Anytime a woman stands up for herself, she is called a bitch, not a butch. There is waaaay more involved for a woman to go from being a bitch to being called butch.

Trashing on Edwards may make people feel better, but he's just another lightning rod for peoples' frustrations on this. Frankly, REAL men 'do the math', and can see the problems involved with continuing to be reliant on other countries for our energy. If we went for energy independence like a bunch of crazed maniacs, well, there's a real good chance there'd be no army boots in the middle east, period. I give Bush BIG props for that statement he made, "We are addicted to oil."
I mean, it was a no-brainer of a thing to say, but it was also HONEST. And, I think honesty plays a big part in what we're witnessing today, or, rather, more pointedly, a lack of it.
At any rate, if people are going to be shooting and killing each other over possession of an oilfield, it really doesn't need to be our troops in the way.
Further, I don't think you can really force democracy, I think maybe you can teach it, but no one likes having something rammed down their throats, they either pick up the concept or they don't, and they'd be more likely to pick it up, I think, if we did a lot better job of practicing it in our own country. But, now in the digital age, they read our papers too, and see the corruption, the patronage, and the lack of any real power, there, on the part of the voters, and frankly, that's a Big Problem. I heard a rap song one time, 'guns and money', something like that, anyway it is about the same thing that 'money makes the world go round', meaning that, in essence, money talks, bullshit walks, and there's NO shortage of bullshit these days. Let's have our energy independence, which will also eventually translate into getting our economic independence back, and an end to the rhetoric and endless posturing on this or that issue. Other countries need to stand up, and take issue with their own problems. If they don't/if they won't, well...
