Despite "Straight Talk Express" Relaunch, McCain Ducks Questions On Attorney Purge, Homosexuality

Is the engine of the "Straight Talk Express" already sputtering? Despite the aggressively publicized relaunch of this symbol of his alleged 2000 maverick streak -- which we reported here yesterday -- John McCain is refusing to answer tough questions about the Attorney Purge and homosexuality. Here's what today's New York Times says about the McCain bus tour's opening yesterday:

"On Thursday, even as he promised a stream of the candid comments that distinguished him in 2000 -- `Anything, anything you want to talk about,' he said -- he steered clear of offering opinions on two of the biggest issues on the political landscape this week. He declined to say whether he agreed with the assertion by Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that homosexuality is immoral, or whether he thought Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales should be ousted for his handling of the firing of federal prosecutors."

The Times article zeros in on an issue that concerns many of us, John McCain's age. Right or wrong, people think of age and they think of Ronald Reagan and his Alzheimer's disease and wonder when it actually started and who was really in charge in the White House.

McCain, like John Kerry encountered in the 2004 election, has been in the Senate for a very long time and has a long record that can be quoted and misquoted in any campaign. And like Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, McCain may be a party rebel on a few issues but he's basically a conservative Republican.

Giuliani may not be a fresh face, but he's a fresh candidate not part of the Washington establishment though he carries a lot of baggage. Presidents don't generally come out of the US Senate, the last one was John Kennedy. Vice presidents and governors seem to have a better chance and though Giuliani wasn't a govenor he was Mayor of New York City which is akin to being a governor.

The "Straight Talk Express" - it doesn't sound like there is too much straight talk in that vehicle.

I'm looking forward to more of a Loose Cannon Express. But lately he doesn't say much at all.

I'm almost embarrassed for McCain, at the total joke he has become. Does he really think that a dottering old man on a bus, driving across America, is going to impress ANYONE? It didn't work the first time, Johnny.

They're all gonna laugh at you.

I can see him dodging the homosexuality issue as it is (... wait for it) The Straight Talk Express.

Someone has to pick the low-hanging fruit.

The Straight talk Express was a great P.R. move --- eight years ago. After the long Clinton impeachment bamboozlement and circus, "Straight Talk" was, well, great spin. Unfortunately for the Senator, these things have a freshness date. The country doesn't want "talk" of any kind in 2008; we want action. Leadership. We want our Constitution and our good-name back. After eight years of getting Bush's back and the relentless sucking up to the religous-right, McCain has shown us he is not the guy for the job.
