Second Blogger Quits Edwards Campaign
Melissa McEwan, the second blogger for John Edwards' Presidential campaign, has now resigned her position. On her personal blog, Shakespeare's Sister, she writes:
I regret to say that I have also resigned from the Edwards campaign. In spite of what was widely reported, I was not hired as a blogger, but a part-time technical advisor, which is the role I am vacating.I would like to make very clear that the campaign did not push me out, nor was my resignation the back-end of some arrangement made last week. This was a decision I made, with the campaign's reluctant support, because my remaining the focus of sustained ideological attacks was inevitably making me a liability to the campaign, and making me increasingly uncomfortable with my and my family's level of exposure.
I understand that there will be progressive bloggers who feel I am making the wrong decision, and I offer my sincerest apologies to them. One of the hardest parts of this decision was feeling as though I'm letting down my peers, who have been so supportive.
There will be some who clamor to claim victory for my resignation, but I caution them that in doing so, they are tacitly accepting responsibility for those who have deluged my blog and my inbox with vitriol and veiled threats. It is not right-wing bloggers, nor people like Bill Donohue or Bill O'Reilly, who prompted nor deserve credit for my resignation, no matter how much they want it, but individuals who used public criticisms of me as an excuse to unleash frightening ugliness, the likes of which anyone with a modicum of respect for responsible discourse would denounce without hesitation.
This is a win for no one.
I cant help but think this would have blown over in a week or two, at least until Michelle Malkin found some other reason to launch the flying monkeys. I am disappointed in the resignations and that John Edwards accepted the resignation.

Melissa has seemed to me the more rational of the two bloggers in this whole ordeal. Amanda continues to be much more defiant and unapologetic.
But it isn't "the sustained ideological attacks" that made Melissa (and Amanda) liabilities to the Edward's campaign. Their past writings are what made them liabilities.
And neither they nor their defenders are willing to admit that.
So while I hear screaming from the left about some alleged double standard out there, I have witnessed the left actually apply it by attacking Donahue while they dismiss, rationalize, diminish and even defend the anti-Catholic crap Melissa and Amanda did write.
Melissa is correct in stating this is a win win for no one. I can only hope the Edward's campaign will recover so they can focus on issues most Americans care about.
Because worrying whether bloggers are getting a fair shake isn't one them.

It does not bother you that personal threats are how political decisions are made in America? And find me one left blogger that does what the right frequently does in terms of advocating violence ('glassing' whole countries, killing too-moderate Supreme Court judges, eliminating liberals, etc. and all that is in public -- I shudder to think what messages regarding her family this young woman received).
I did not rate your comment because I do believe that one is responsible for whatever one does within internet discussions and have not read all of what these young women wrote, but the point is that Kerry was taken out of the election campaign by a right wing media machine that was fed lies and I am willing to bet that the same thing will happen to any and every Democratic nominee this time unless Democrats stand up and maybe even iof they do. America is treading in very, very dangerous political waters and the whole world knows it.

I don't know if Malkin is insane but certainly her demeanor and her words are relatively twisted. The fact that she has not yet been marginalized is testament to the hypocrisy of the Right. William Donohue, on the other hand, is engaging in activities which skirt the line of blackmail. He's been allowed to get away with it for too long. If nothing else, this particular fool needs to be brought down and I'm sure, somewhere, there are the skeletons to do it.
The Left is often so busy being "above it all" and playing by the rules of decency that the Right believes it has the impunity to behave as disgustingly as possible. Maybe a lot of people on the Left don't want to get their hands dirty like this but I think working towards the end of careers for people like Donohue would send a message.

In the grand scheme of things, this matters about as much as whether a stray lock of hair blows into Hillary's eyes as she answers a question on a TV interview. Notwithstanding the threats and ugly emails, both bloggers should have stayed on, because the slime to Edwards is done, and it can't get any worse. That's a lot to put behind a 'notwithstanding,' I know.
Even now, the fact that MoveOn removed the Hitler ads is conveniently overlooked by wingnuts. MoveOn had to remove the ads because the ads were really stupid on principle. Dishonest right-wingers will continue to slime Edwards because of the blogger thing even though both have resigned, and unlike the MoveOn Hitler thing, there was little wrong with either of them in principle.

What personal threats are you referring to?
This whole story broke because Bill Donahue and Michelle Malkin happened to look up the things these two bloggers posted on their blogs.
Conflating this to what happened to John Kerry is comparing apples to oranges. John Kerry was a victim of a group of wingnuts who smeared his military service by spreading false stories. Malkin and Donahue just used the bloggers own words against them.
If Amanda and Melissa want to criticize the Catholic religion and it's practices and policies, that is their perogative. I am not a committed practicing Catholic but even I could see some of their posts were mean-spirited, crude and offensive. And if you haven't read what they wrote, then why are you responding to my post at all?
In my view, this has and always will be about what is best for the John Edward's campaign. Not what is best for the bloggers.

I don't blame the blogger for resigning, but I hate it everytime any group thinks they can use threats of violence to suppress freedom. I am not sure how to respond, but maybe we should boycott Donohue, O'Reilly and Malkin. It is time that the hate speakers on the right were held to the same standard they want to impose on the left.

Edwards' campaign should have checked out the statements Amanda and Melissa had made before hiring them. Failing that, being politically savvy, they should have known the what reaction would be and disqualified themselves, or at least tipped the campaign that some of their utterances were maybe a little too far "out there" for mainstream appeal.
OTOH, maybe they didn't care, under the theory that any publicity is good publicity . . . .

You are right, people do have to take responsibility for their own actions. On the other hand we are talking about a new medium that does encourage intemperate talk. I have read the work of both women and have to agree their comments were not what I would have said, but then again I have read the work of a lot of bloggers including Maklin, and have to say that they are equally over the top. That is one of the blessings of the blogs. You can read stuff you will never encounter in the mainstream media, in a coffee shop discussion or down at the local bar, maybe, but never in the mainstream media.
From a broader perspective the greatest threat to the right is the free wheeling nature of the political blogs. They want to tame them. What better way to gain control of the blogs than to keep contrary bloggers from earning a living.
If the comments had been made by Edwards, then they would have been fair game, but they were made by the women, who were holding down low level staff jobs, before they went to work for Edwards.
Allowing this to pass could move the blogs from the cutting edge of freedom to just another pap filled politically correct extension of top down media.

McEwan is lying when she says Donohue and OReilly had no affect. She was getting emails for weeks now, but only when OReilly broadcast her posts on his show did the Edwards campaign push her out. Two resignations within 24 hours is a clear indication of what was happening behind the scenes.
Even Edwards said he was offended by their comments, which is the moment he should have cut them off. You can't expose yourself needlessly to attacks in today's politics. There are powerful media forces on both sides, waiting to pounce on the slightest screw-up (ask Joe Biden or George Allen). Candidates may be held to an impossible standard, which is leading to more and more of them being programmed and working from a short script.

Bad move by Melissa. She got hate mail. So what?
These attacks had nothing to do with the content of the messages the bloggers were authoring and everything to do with PR/DC press perception battles. It will hurt these two and the campaign more having run from the situation, than it would have to stick it out. And really this reflects the worst on Edwards PR persons who should have realized immediately this was a life or death struggle with Donahue and the forces he represents. Donahue wasn't really interested in the commentary of these two as much as just attacking publicly to seem relevant. The rest of the right wing jumped on with the hope of attempting to stigmatize the use of mainstream bloggers. It was never about the comments it was all PR. If Edwards PR team had realized this and declared it as such there would have been no problems. Case in point the Bush twins regularly get drunk/high and party very publicly and yet the Washington Post reporters and others treat them like "girls", unworthy as news. And yet their only meaningful employment was on their father's re-election campaigns. If Edwards PR team needed to deflect it could have pointed out the rampant pedophilia in the Catholic church that Donahue is "avoiding" by focusing on the trivialities of low level staffers in the Edwards campaign.
The whole tact by team Edwards was way too nice. They assumed that Donahue had a legitimate problem that was worthy of attention, and the tried to address it. If Donahue had been genuinely interested he would have quietly contacted the campaign about his problems with it before launching his well trumpeted broadside. That he did not do so, indicates the bad faith and lack of character inherent in the whole assault.
Edwards biggest PR problem is that he is too nice and too accommodating to his opposition. To this day when I think of Edwards I think of the stunned deer in headlights look he had when Cheney claimed never to have met him in the public debate. Apparently he and his team have learned nothing since then, and even irrelevant twerps like Donahue can make him jump TWO YEARS before election season! I like Edwards but this fiasco does not bode well. To clean it up he should replace/seriously augment quietly or publicly his PR staff. He should then tack dramatically left, to create a serious distinction between himself Obama and Hillary. He should be bristling for the next fight, because there will certainly be another since he has shown he is easy meat, with the right wing poodles and slap them back into place quickly and effectively.

I respectfully disagree your fair game comment. The comments were fair game regardless of who made them, whether low level staffers or John Edwards himself. The hiring decisions of a potential future President should be scrutinized.
Are liberals going to claim we're not going criticize the people working on Republican presidential campaigns? I have read some of those items on Josh Marshall's own Talking Points Memo.
I think it is a fair complaint that the mainstream media has given Donahue much more attention than he deserves. But the Edward's campaign also helped to prolong this story from the outset.
As far as the theory that the right wing is preventing liberal bloggers from earning a living, one could make the same argument on the other side.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recently pulled the plug on having Bill O'Reilly speak at their fundraiser due to complaints from the public. And I have also been one of many requesting ABC and CNN to yank Glenn Beck off the air.
This pendulum swings both ways.

You'll need to explain how Ted Haggard was a left-wing hit job. As far as I can tell, it was a story about hypocracy -- a high-profile homophobic bigot turns out to be gay.
It's not much different for Mark Foley. I understand that there's the rumor that some of the Dems might have known about Foley for a few weeks before the story was released (much of that has been debunked, btw), but considering that so many of the lies and coverups came from the GOP House leadership over the course of YEARS, if that's all there is on the Dems, well that's just not much. For God sakes, the GOP deliberately kept the Dems out of the loop on Foley precisely because they knew the Dems would blow the whistle. If the Dems knew about it, why keep them out of the loop?
To imply both sides employ an equal level of dirty tricks, whether on these issues or any others, means you haven't been paying attention.

The MoveOn Hitler ad (ads? was there more than one?) as your refer to it, was one entry among something like 1700 (from people not affiliated with MoveOn--why does no one mention this?). In typical democratic form, MoveOn let their members vote. Sadly for the wingers, the Hitler ad didn't do well at all and was thus cast into the dustbin of history.
But the lies had to be spread, so the wingers made up all kinds of nonsense about MoveOn and clearly the lies continue to spread.

This is pure ridiculousness, Brook Dataski. Aside from being irrelevant, your suggestion that the downfall of either one of these men was the result of Democratic smears is, in the case of Foley, completely unfounded, and, in the case of Haggard, completely false.
First, your reference to Foley's sexually predatory behavior as "indiscretions" is telling, but it's not nearly as revealing as your suggestion that, since that behavior was "well-known," he should have been allowed to continue preying on teenage boys. If you have information that the story was initiated by a Democrat, then by all means share that information with the rest of us. I'm sure parents of teenagers everywhere would love to thank that person.
Second, Ted Haggard's homosexuality & drug use was exposed by the male prostitute he was paying to do these things with. Maybe the guy happens to vote Democratic. I have no idea. But your suggestion that the sordid details of this particular affair came to light because of some larger Democratic smear campaign is a conspiracy theory of the first order.
Lastly, to compare either of these episodes, rife with salaciousness & hypocrisy as they are, with the noodlings of a blogger displays the kind of detachment from reality of which only the diehard right seems capable these days.

After being burned like this, they and others will be more careful in the future. Stuff like this happens, and it will happen again. Does anyone but the right pay any attention to the right. They have never been constructive about anything they just throw rocks...all they do. Donahue is just going around trying to find ways to justify his job title. How many associations have been duped by that old line "you have a problem and need me to fix it". When was the last time he said or did anything meaningful?But these hate groups are vicious with their threats and 'nothing' is sacred to them. They demonstrate over and over the behavior of Nazis and live to instill fear. These bloggers learned quickly that this had nothing to do with politics or issues of the campaign but more with sub-human scum looking for targets. Shamefully, America has already been bought and sold in the media but the more the media lies about everything the more the public will hold them to scrutiny always noting... "hell, you can't believe a word they say anymore Greg". A real shame 'cause Edwards has the face to be able to make fun of anybody. Well, Brook Dataski, the Swift Boat story about Kerry WAS a right-wing smear, subsidized by wealthy Republican supporters of Bush. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_Boat_Veterans#Connections_with_Republicans) The organization was created for the sole purpose of slandering John Kerry, and sabotaging his presidential campaign. The organization created & circulated demonstrably false information about Kerry's war record -- which is a polite way of saying that they lied.
On the other hand, the information that came out about Mark Foley in the run-up to his election was proven to be true. He WAS sending sexually explicit instant messages & e-mails to Congressional pages. I challenge you, though, to show me any documentation that links Democratic organizations or operatives to the revelation of Mark Foley's sexually predatory habits.
So your claims are bogus on two counts. In the first place, there is no equivalence, since the allegations about Kerry were proven to be false, while the facts of the Foley case revealed his history of inappropriate behavior toward teenage boys, as well as Republicans' unwillingness to curb his predatory behavior. In the second place, the false allegations leveled against Kerry WERE conducted by Republican operatives, while there's absolutely no evidence that Democrats had anything to do with Foley's downfall.

Why not? I, along with other liberals, am perfectly willing to take credit for helping to get Bill O'Reilly yanked from his speaking engagement at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
I'm sure O'Reilly and his ilk would consider me a "lowlife" for demonstrating what he views as my "intolerance and hypocrisy".
But who gives a crap about what I, or Malkin or Donahue take credit for?
Again, this isn't about Malkin and Donahue "winning" anything. Donahue actually urged Edward's to fire the bloggers. In retrospect, that was pretty damned good advice.
Defiantly keeping the bloggers around and issuing disingenuous "apologies" and statements actually played right into the right wing machine's hands. It proved to be an unnecessary distraction for the Edward's campaign and it actually proved the right wing's allegation that liberals hate Catholics and/or religion in general.
And if you seen some of the anti-Catholic diatribes floating around in the comment sections of various liberal blogs SINCE this story broke, Donahue's allegations about liberals' views on Catholicism is pretty much on target.
And Edward's need to distance himself from that element of the progressive movement as quickly as possible if he has any chance of winning the nomination, let alone the presidency.

Perhaps. But potential voters, including Catholics (as despicable as some liberals believe them to be), should never be ignored by a candidate running for President.
Especially for the sake of protecting a couple of "low level" (as I've seen them described on this message board) staffers.
How the Edward's campaign handled this whole affair tells me much more about potential problems with his leadership and/or advisors than Malkin or Donahue ever could.

There are people of every ideological stripe that say things that a reasonable person would find objectionable, but I don't think that liberals qua liberals are any more likely to offer anti-Catholic opinions than conservatives or moderates.
Controversies sometimes arise because most of the major religions hold doctrines that (because they were "formulated" at a much earlier time) may be construed as being at odds with modernity. Merely pointing out that a particular tenet is anachronistic doesn't ipso facto mean that the person that who did so is anti a particular religion. Unfortunately, problems can arise because the people that write about these issues may do so in a sensationalistic way in order to attract a wider audience.
IMO, the problem arose because the Edwards campaign failed to properly vet the bloggers they hired to see if anything that they have ever written was in conflict with the candidate's philosophy and or sensibilities. I don't think that implicates Edwards' leadership ability. It was likely the result of a poor decision by a staffer. Now, on some level, that failure is imputed to Edwards, but at this point I think it was almost certainly an isolated incident.
The moral of this story is that Donahue and Malkin are harming more than helping their cause.

Too much irrelevancy by half. Bigotry against evangelical Christians is widespread in so-called "progressive" circles. Now, members of that same group are criticizing two people for making "meanspirited" comments about Catholics. Any Christian who comes to political blogs quickly learns to expect the worst treatment to come from the people who brag most about their "liberal" views.
Get back to me when sneering about Haggard is seen as unacceptable as sneering about Catholic beliefs. The sad truth is, "progressives" have failed as miserably as "reactionaries" in learning one of the simplest but most important lessons in life: You can't make yourself look good by making someone else look bad.
