Did Edwards Campaign Fire Its Liberal Bloggers?

Did John Edwards's campaign fire the two liberal bloggers that have come under fire from the right for allegedly anti-Catholic blog posts? Salon says they've got the scoop:

The right-wing blogosphere has gotten its scalps -- John Edwards has fired the two controversial bloggers he recently hired to do liberal blogger outreach, Salon has learned.

The bloggers, Amanda Marcotte, formerly of Pandagon, and Melissa McEwan, of Shakespeare's Sister, had come under fire from right-wing bloggers for statements they had previously made on their respective blogs. A statement by the Catholic League's Bill Donohue, which called Marcotte and McEwan "anti-Catholic vulgar trash-talking bigots," and an accompanying article on the controversy in the New York Times this morning, put extra pressure on the campaign.

But Edwards spokesperson Jennifer Palmieri cautioned Salon "against reporting that they have been fired." She promised that the campaign would "have something to say later." More soon.

Meanwhile, Salon's full report is here.

Wierd phrasing in the article:

"The right-wing blogosphere has gotten its scalps -- John Edwards has fired the two controversial bloggers he recently hired to do liberal blogger outreach, Salon has learned.

Speculation from sources that the two bloggers might be rehired was bolstered by Jennifer Palmieri, a spokeswoman for the Edwards campaign, who said in an e-mail that she would "caution [Salon] against reporting that they have been fired. We will have something to say later."

So Salon is reporting they were hired, fired, and rehired?

According to Media Matters:

William A. Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, has made 23 guest appearances on TV news programs in 2004. Donohue uses his appearances primarily to attack gays and progressives. He has referred to the "gay death style," remarked, "God forbid we'd run out of little gay kids," claimed that Senator John Kerry "never found an abortion he couldn't justify," and claimed that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular ... Hollywood likes anal sex."

One would think that buckling to the demands of that type of "spokesperson" (wasn't he also on Hardball defending the child molesting priests?) is a place that Edwards would not want to go again. You can only say "I regret that decision" so many times before you wear thin.

If true, Edwards has lost my vote. Anyone who'd fold on something this lame is not going to be up to the challenge of fighting hard in 2008.

Yeah, I would have suggested they go with the "So what?" strategy used by Madonna when her "Sex" book came out, but that seems increasingly unrealistic.

user-pic

If it is true, I am disappointed with Mr. Edwards. Considering that it may have been politically expedient to have fired these bloggers, I still am sorry to have yet another politician bow to a right-wing swift-boating.

user-pic

Edwards is incredibly stupid if he fires them. You've got to be kidding me. Its the FIRST F'ING thing the right has thrown at him, and he CAVES! Not the sign of someone who seems up for the fight of his life.

user-pic

Speaking of whom, Bill Donohue has also gone after Madonna for her stage shows. He's a major blowhard. Edwards better be careful in his response or else he's going to embolden these guys, which is the last thing you want to do in this situation.

How about: My campaign workers were speaking for themselves and themselves only on their personal blogs, and I do not agree with or condone such comments. However, I recognize and appreciate that they care very deeply about the issues facing America today, even if their passion has led to some perhaps overly emotional expressions in the past. I think we've all said or typed some things in the heat of the moment that we've later come to regret.

user-pic

This doesn't make sense, because Shakes didn't do anything. That quoted passage wasn't about Catholics, didn't even use the word; if that's evidence of anti-Catholic bias then anyone could be fired.

user-pic

Jesus, and Donahue has the nerve to accuse anyone else of bigotry?  And people actually listen to him?

This country is in deep doo-doo.

user-pic

I'd be very disappointed if he caved in and fired them, too, but we don't know yet if that's even the case.

user-pic

I can hear the netroots support crumbling even as we speak...

Dumb move, Sen. Edwards.

And, "bloggers" is still a very dirty word. If campaigns are going to take them on, then they need to be prepared for the inevitable. Everyone of us here has everything we've ever "said" online, easily accessible, one google away.

It's going to come back. If you're not going to stand by your staff, don't hire them.

I hope it isn't the case that Michelle Malkin and Bill Donahue can influence major Democratic presidential campaign decisions. No judgment without more information, but... John... you're supposed to listen to our side, not their side.

It's time Donahue and his phony organization -- anybody see any other members of his loony, veins-popping organization but Bill? -- get taken down. He's a pure conservative play, trained by the Heritage Foundation, and explicitly a political operative deployed to peel off the last of the Reagan Democrats, who were disproportionately urban Catholic Archie Bunkers.

How about a nod to Terry Moran's brother's wingnut website, too?

user-pic

For fuck's sake. I can't imagine how much more intollerable and insane Malkin will be if her shrieking manages to influence the Edwards campaign. Perhaps Dems really are weak, because every time one of them gets swiftboated he or she just stands there blinking, or ultimately caves to the manufactured "outrage."

Doesn't Edwards know the Malkins and Riehls of the moron-o-sphere are little more than running punchlines?

It's getting to the point where the wingers will find anything and blow it up to be the biggest afront ever perpetrated on America, and Dems will bow down and apologize.

Barf.

user-pic

This news, if true, is disappointing. Democratic candidates have to get over their phobia of confrontation. This inability to 'stand and fight' has cost the Party it's face, as nobody can really identify any more what exactly they are, or what they stand for.

Edwards should have given that blowhard Donahue teh short shrift he deserved, blown off the bloviating with a 'so what, you know he's a nut-case....' and gone on with his day's work. Now, he's lost a lot of respect from the netroots, which he may never be able to regain. Fool me once, shame on you....fool me twice, shame on me....

user-pic

as a lamont supporter in ct, this sounds oddly, sadly, familiar: enthusiastic support from edwards followed by wishy-washy evasions when push came to shove. edwards can start a fine, fine talk but doesn't seem able to finish the walk. unfortunately this whole episode reminds me of how pres. clinton dealt with shrill reactions to lani gaunier's atty general nomination. if the rightwingers learn they can get edwards to jump or even just quiver, they will just keep screaming.

too bad, i liked the guy. if he starts caving now . . .

user-pic

Spend an inordinate time talking about an inconsequentially small issue: shame on all of us.

Why is there such outrage over the hiring practices, or "maybe" firing practices of two bloggers, YET there's no such outrage when it comes to real issues. Why aren't people outraged about poverty in this country? Why aren't people outraged about Iraq? Why aren't people outraged about healthcare in this country?

No, no, let's waste all of our outrage on whether or not hiring two bloggers was a good or bad idea.

Are we that petty? Are we that self-centered? Oo, the "netroots" is going to be mad at him. Who cares? The "netroots" should be mad at themselves for making this a story. You're disappointed that he'll "cave" to the right wingers. Well congratulations, you took the bait of the right wingers. You shifted attention on real issues to ones that are not. You have been influenced by Donahue and Malkin as well.

At the end of the day, this isn't an issue and it pales in comparison to what needs to be talked about and accomplished.

Stop wasting everyone's time.

user-pic

Don't you mean, "You won't get fooled again?"

There's no difference between Marcotte and Misha, except that Marcotte has bullied her way through our liberal blogosphere.

She was a bad hire as her message is primarily negative and Edwards is trying to make his message one of hope and optimism.

user-pic
Why aren't people outraged about poverty in this country?

We are.

Why aren't people outraged about Iraq?

We are.

Why aren't people outraged about healthcare in this country?

We are.

It's precisely because I'm outraged that I want someone who will fight these people to the death in 2008. If Edwards caves on a minor issue with low-level heat now, he will cave on a big issue later. That's not the standard-bearer we want.

Sorry, Edwards had my vote at the start of today. Whether he caves or not is going to determine whether he has my vote at the end of it.

this, combined with edwards' wambly non-stand on invading iran, plus his boo-yah rah rah in favor of israel's policy, has turned me away from the ex-senator.

now i'm back to square one for a candidate.

Kerry and Clark were the only big Democrats who came out looking good in the CT Senate race last year, IMO. I lost respect for Russ Feingold when he was silent about Lieberman's $387,000 petty cash. Feingold made his name on campaign finance; is it OK with Russ Feingold to open up a $387,000 petty cash loophole?

I read that John Edwards more or less invited himself to CT right after Lamont won the nomination and used his appearance to talk about his poverty issue rather than something that would have helped Ned Lamont.

user-pic

i disagree. i am outraged by the state of affairs on every single question you mentioned. that is why i volunteered for lamont, and that is why i was happy to see edwards come to ct and support lamont early in the general. finally, i thought - if we could get these two guys in there, maybe things could change - even just a little (on iraq, on poverty, on health care). it didn't happen. so if edwards can't get a spine about something as major as supporting lamont, and as minor as defending his internet employees, it just plain looks bad. bad research, bad anticipation, bad response, bad loyalty. this has been brewing for almost a week. i'd hoped it would blow over but guess what? it didn't, and here we are.

user-pic

Why did they fire Melissa? This whole controversy has been about Marcotte I thought. I mean you can find easily find Marcotte posts to portray her as a Total Bitch(tm) but McEwan has never come off that way that I know of.

user-pic

Hell, I'll vote for {you guessed it} over any Repugnantlican.

user-pic

No, no, let's waste all of our outrage on whether or not hiring two bloggers was a good or bad idea....Oo, the "netroots" is going to be mad at him. Who cares?

Um, since we're bloggers here, the topic's certainly of interest, no?

And since the netroots have built themselves up to a place where they have meaning in the political process, of course it matters whether or not his credibility is shot with a section of the Democratic Party.

Dissent Protects Democracy.

user-pic

I don't know much about Melissa, but Amanda was probably a poor hiring choice from the beginning. To call her a "liberal" is a stretch. She's into shock and awe, maybe trying to be an Ann Coulter of the left. And she's primarily into cultural/sexual issues; not much about "the two Americas." I can sort of understand why Edwards would not want to get bogged down in her baggage; it just gives the right more opportunity to distract from the message.

user-pic

If you're going to claim that cultural/sexual issues have nothing to do with "the two Americas" then I'd venture you have little contact with the laborers in this country. Go to any working class bar when work is getting out. Talk with the gals and guys about politics, religion, sex - all the stuff that in this day the working classes are much more comfortable being frank and funny about than the upper classes are - and you'll see that these topics mix freely, often in the same sentences.

Look, we're monkeys. Power and wealth are about sex. But so is the power of those who aren't wealthy. Encouraging sexual repression and fear among the workers is a way to undercut their power. Reserving crude language for the right wingers and railing against anyone of the center or left who "dares" talk or write that way is a method to enforce a solidarity with the workers - who do largely talk that way - as the preserve of the extreme right.

If we want to f**king connect with the workers, we can't go around pretending our minds and ears are too tender for their common uses of a language which, as any Shakespeare among us would attest, belongs to them just as much as to us educated fops.

user-pic

Was Edwards in the military? And are people challenging his military record despite mounds and mounds of documentation? That's what "swift-boating" refers to, right?

For some reason I don't like the spread of "swift boating" beyond what it was. Kerry's attacks were egregious in a way this episode isn't and doesn't come close to. This is regular run-of-the-mill political mudslinging, even if the mud isn't so dirty.

user-pic

I don't like it, it presumes that there is something to "regret" beyond the instigation of the fake controversy. Some people actually are assholes, bitches, and Preznit Horse-Crankers and I don't think it's should be regrettable to make that observation.
