Poll: Leading Dems Beating McCain In Head-To-Head Matchups

Some interesting new numbers from Newsweek: The mag has released a poll today finding that Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards all hold an edge, however slight, over John McCain in head-to-head matchups. Of those three Dems, however, only one beats Rudy Giuliani in such a matchup: John Edwards. Interestingly, a generic Dem holds a staggering 21-point edge over a generic Republican, 49%-28%.

That is more than "interestingly."
That has a serious WOW! factor. Yes, staggering fits.
McCain's polls are plummeting in New Hampshire, where he beat Bush in 2000 (and thus the SC smear). No doubt it is the McCain Doctrine.
Anyway, thanks for making my day!

These polls are meaningless.

Hillary, McCain and Edwards matchups are somewhat meaningful because the public knows them. So right now it looks like they are in a statistical tie.

The rest, especially Rudy and Obama are meaningless. The public only has a vague idea of who they are. They don't know where they stand.

Keep in mind this time in 1991 Bill Clinton was badly trailing other Dem candidates as well as Poppy. Nobody knew who he was.

IMO, Romney, Brownback even Huckabee will be far more formidable GOP opponents than Rudy.

It's funny. A number of months ago, the Republican candidate I was most worried about was McCain, because I thought he'd have great broad electoral appeal. But I mostly discounted his chances nonetheless, because I thought he'd never get past the primaries.

Now it's the opposite. I think he has a pretty good chance getting through the Republican primaries as the winner.

But he will be savaged in the general election because of his now eponymous doctrine.

As will be the fate, I'm convinced, of ANY successful Republican nominee.
