McCain: I Want A "Dialogue" With Dobson
In a sign of just how determined John McCain is to win over the Christian Right, McCain has responded to Focus on the Family head James Dobson's recent rebuff of him by asking Dobson for a "dialogue."
A couple of days ago Dobson revealed that he was literally praying that McCain not win the nomination, partly because of McCain offenses such as his tolerance of private gay marriage ceremonies. Asked by the Associated Press to respond, McCain said: "I'm obviously disappointed and I'd like to continue and have a dialogue with Dr. Dobson and other members of the community." (Note that McCain respectfully referred to Dobson as "Dr. Dobson.") McCain then listed his recent outreach to other Christian conservatives including Jerry Falwell, Rick Warren and Richard Land.
McCain, you may recall, responded to such denunciations in 2000 by describing Christian Right leaders as "agents of intolerance." McCain lost, of course. Perhaps he's learned his lesson this time around.

I think he's learned a lesson - this time he has a shot of losing in the general!

Funny, I would like Dobson to just STFU and I suspect McCain would as well. The one thing I used to like about McCain was a willingness (within the linguistic bounds of a politician) to tell him so. But lately, McCain's about as authentic as the Cracker Barrel. The "Straight Talk Express" is still boarding at the station.

Can we get those big flip-flops the Rethugs use to carry around at Kerry functions back in 2004? They would be very handy at McCain's functions this time around.

McCain gas no chance for the nomination. The Republican base--meaning the bigots, war lovers, religious fanatics, and hate mongers that form the core of this party--will never believe McCain hates the same way they do. Dobson's attitude about McCain is absolutely typical of the Rethuglican base.
McCain has debased himself so utterly--imagine wanting a "dialogue" with a fruitcake who is urging people to pray for your defeat!--that now the few semi-normal people likely to vote in Republican primaries know he is nothing but a hypocrite shilling for votes. My bet is by the time the primaries roll around, he'll be in 3rd or 4th place.
I've got $5 says Jeb Bush will be the nominee (but I want 5 to 1 odds). The nominee can't be a liberal like McCain, Romney, or Giuliani. Who does that leave? Brownback? Gingrich? (the Republicans' Sharpton!) I don't think so. It'll be Jeb v. Hillary in '08!

Romney is moving to the right as quickly as possible. Mike Huckabee is also out there.
