Gilmore Files Papers To Explore Presidential Run
Former Virginia GOP Governor Jim Gilmore has taken a step towards running for President this morning, filing papers with the FEC to form an exploratory committee, the Associated Press reports. To the extent Gilmore's known outside Virginia at all, it's as a tax-cutter who's rammed cuts through Dem-controlled legislatures and as a top official on a Congress-appointed commission launched in 1999 to investigate how better to handle the terror threat. The commission unveiled its work a week before September 11. Gilmore is only the latest of several GOP candidates who have justified their entry into the race by arguing that the field lacks a "true conservative."
