Religious Right Group Using Specter Of Muslim Congressman To Raise Money

Keith Ellison, the first Muslim member of Congress, may be awfully frighting to some folks, but he's also proving rather useful to at least one religious right organization: The American Family Association, which is using the specter of Ellison being sworn in on a Koran as a way to raise money. Check out this AFA "Action Alert," which blares: "A first for America...The Koran replaces the Bible at swearing-in oath."

Then at the end comes this conclusion: "If you think our efforts are worthy, would you please support us with a small gift?"

The specter of Ellison getting sworn in on the Koran may be frightful indeed, but it just so happens that the notion that the Koran is "replacing the Bible" at the swearing-in is based on a complete falsehood: The swearing-in ceremony for Representatives doesn't even include a Bible. Of course, the fact that this is all a hoax doesn't mean it's not useful for raising money. Via Huffington Post.

What a surprise. Dennis Prager is a liar and a fraud who foments fear of the Other and general ignorance, and so do his supporters in Donald Wildmon's so-called "American Family Association," which claims 3.5 million members on their website. 3.5 million people they can manipulate and misinform.

This column and alert are borderline Jim Crow-type appeals to the basest instincts of the American people.

The language they use to point out that Dennis Prager is a Jew is also odd. To me it reads as if they are saying, "And it's not just us who think it's bad that a Muslim who worships the Koran got elected. Even this Jew does."

The agents of intolerance (whatever happened to McCain 2000?) will never be appeased, but their idiocy must continually be illuminated to as broad of an audience as possible.

The Gary Bauer quasi-endorsement of Mitt Romney also appears on their website. Won't Mitt insist on the Book of Mormon being used at his swearing-in ceremony? What would happen to Christianity in America then? I'm talking about Old World Christianity, i.e. Catholicism and Protestantism, not new world Mormonism.

Bauer: In Some Cases, Candidate's Stance on Issues Outweighs Theological Differences
A pro-family activist and former presidential candidate says it's more important to look at what a candidate believes on the issues than what the candidate's theological beliefs might be. That is why Gary Bauer says he wouldn't necessarily rule out voting for a Mormon. – Read Details

This website really is pretty unbelieveable. Read this story about converting Muslims.

http://www.afa.net/

...A Mississippi-based missions agency is helping Christians around the world learn how to better witness to Muslims. Delbert Adamson (not his real name) is a missionary through Tupelo-based Global Outreach International. Adamson and his family travel the world, teaching Christian leaders, pastors, and laypeople how to reach out to Muslims. Adamson says while there are many people in Latin America and Asia who want to impact the lives of Muslims for Christ, there appears to be a dearth of such individuals in the U.S. "In America and in the West in general," says Adamson, "we have education and we have resources -- but we really lack the people who are willing and able to go to work with Muslims." But in Latin America and Asia, says the missionary, there are "literally hundreds of thousands" who are wanting to go but are waiting on the resources and the training. According to Adamson, Muslims are receptive to the truth of God's Word -- but that most Christian missionaries make a mistake by approaching them in the same manner used in the past with various people groups. "We love them," he assures, "[but] with the growth of radical Islam, they're asking really hard questions and they're looking for the answers. So we try to help [the missionaries] know how to answer those questions." Adamson recently trained Christians in Brazil to reach Muslims with the gospel. His next project will focus on Iran. Where Have All the Christians Gone?
Commentary by Joe Murray
Christians have retreated from politics to the subculture and divided amongst themselves. Christians have not remained united in this cultural battle, but have resorted to bickering and infighting -- and in the process have divided our churches and diluted our votes.
