Conservative Gary Bauer: Romney's Mormonism Okay By Me

Conservative activist Gary Bauer has joined the ranks of Christian conservatives that are urging their fellow travelers to look past Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith when considering him as a viable presidential candidate. The Christian news service Agape Press reports that Bauer said that when it comes to choosing who to vote for, issues should trump theology. "There are all kinds of people out there that I have deep theological differences of opinion with, but I might be willing to vote for them for senator or Congress or president, depending on the circumstances and who they were running against," Bauer, the president of American Values, tells Agape.

Bauer adds that he's not worried about Romney using the White House as a platform for the LDS Church: "I don't know how he would do that. I think the public and the media would be on him in a second if he did anything that promoted his particular faith. And, in fact, I think he would be very hesitant to even appoint other Mormons to his cabinet."

Yep, Gary's all kinds of accomodating when he needs to be:

In 1996, Bauer took between $80,000 and $150,000 -- plus expenses -- from the Moonies to speak before one of their front groups, the "Family Federation For World Peace". Cult leader Sun Myung Moon and his fourth wife also spoke at the conference. Bauer defended his speech by saying "I don't see why Christians should censor themselves out of any forum in which our perspectives can be heard. I disagree with the theology of many groups that I address; Jews, for example, who do not accept Jesus, or atheists."

Bauer had no trouble sitting through Moon's amazing speech, which including gems such as:
"God wants a love partner. Thus, centering on the place where husband and wife become one through their sexual organs, God wants to appear and meet us."

"When you were young, did you ever taste the dried mucus from your nose? Does it taste sweet or salty? It's salty, right?"

I think the one to watch is Dobson. From his Larry King interview, it sounds like he's going to play hard to get.

Darn, beat me to it!
Good work.
Yup, Mr. Christianist loves him some moonies.

Hah! I knew the fundies wouldn't let any principles stand in the way of their "issues." It's about power and who controls it.

Unless they can get a true Neanderthal candidate like Brownback to run Romney is their man. He's a true wing-nut and what's not to love?

Of course about 1/2 of the fundies have said that they would "never consider" voting for a Mormon, but when their leaders all line up and tell them to vote for Romney, that won't be a problem.

I doubt he can beat McCain despite the power of the media adulation, but you never know. The big money boys will all be with McCain because "he can win", but the true fire-eyed shock-troops will have Romneey in their hearts.

It could even be enough in the Republican primaries.

But, I suspect that the fix will be in. Republicans don't do primaries. They like to annoint their candidates like kings years in advance. For instance, Bush. We all knew Bush was the candidate by 1998 when all the fixers were quietly organizing for him and all those favorable media articles started appearing about how he "got things done" in the Texas legislature by reaching out to Democrats, blah, blah, blah.

Pretty ironic stuff now, but it was all greasing the wheel.

Starting in the new year expect a TON of Time magazine cover type articles gushing about McCain and what a "Linconesque" figure he is. Makes me want to puke!

But, if nobody in the media said a word when reporting Bush comparing himself to Churchill, don't expect anything better when it comes to McCain.

"…The policy of the emperors and the senate, as far as it concerned religion, was happily seconded by the reflections of the enlightened, and by the habits of the superstitious, part of their subjects. The various modes of worship which prevailed in the Roman world were all considered by the people as equally true; by the philosopher, as equally false; and by the magistrate, as equally useful…" - Ed Gibbons / Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
