Polls: Dems Leading In Six Races For GOP-Held Senate Seats
A new batch of polls from Reuters/Zogby finds that Dems -- who need to win six Senate seats to take control of the chamber -- are leading in, yes, six races for GOP-held Senate races, though in two cases the lead is statistically insignificant:
RI: Whitehouse (D) 53%, Chafee (R) 39% PA: Casey (D) 48%, Santorum (R) 40% OH: Brown (D) 49%, DeWine (R) 40% MO: McCaskill (D) 46%, Talent (R) 43% VA: Webb (D) 45%, Allen (R) 44% MT: Tester (D) 47%, Burns (R) 46%
The poll also finds that in Tennessee, GOP candidate Bob Corker has a 10-point lead over Dem Harold Ford, Jr. Pollster John Zogby comments: "The Democrats have a real shot at the Senate now, and six weeks ago you probably could not have said that. But it's still a jump ball, and there has been volatility both ways."

I was just thinking that the bimbo ads actually worked. I find that pretty sad.

Rasmussen had Ford only down 1 today, and the average since Oct. 30 is only Corker +3.
It ain't over 'til it's over (although this is probably the one race in which Kerry's comments may have actually hurt us, since Ford was Kerry's campaign co-chair).
Still, the polls are all over the place in this race, meaning the screens to choose likely voters and the proportion of Dems vs. GOPpers who show up are probably difficult to predict. It likely comes down to GOTV.
TN-SEN Zogby/Reuters Nov 2 Corker (R) 53%, Ford (D) 43%
TN-SEN Rasmussen Nov 2 Corker (R) 48%, Ford (D) 47%
TN-SEN CNN Oct 31 Corker (R) 52%, Ford (D) 44%
TN-SEN Zogby Int. Oct 31 Corker (R) 49%, Ford (D) 48%
TN-SEN Benenson (D) Oct 30 Ford (D) 48%, Corker (R) 43%

Thanks Ohiomeister...I will continue to be hopeful. I would like to see change..I really would. I hope the people of TN, especially those in East TN, with sons and daughters in Iraq, will be swayed more by Wesley's new ad..than that smut Corker put out.

If the Democtrats only win six Republican seats, they will need Ned Lamont to win in CT in order to take control. I give a lot of credence to the rumors that, if Lieberman is re-elected he will either switch to R, or accept an appointment in the Bush administration, enabling CT's R governor to appoint his successor in the Senate. Lieberman is practically running as an R now, and the Rs must be expecting something from Lieberman in return for all this support he's getting from them.

I really don't know, but I'd be willing to speculate that lib/Dem reaction to the ads hurt more than the ads themselves. Racist and semi-racist whites are extremely sensitive to charges of racism by or on behalf of blacks, unless the racism is utterly obvious (to them). They get very irritated with such claims, and may have held them against Ford. Plus the whole controversy likely caused marginal white voters to focus more than they had on the fact of Ford's blackness. I think it would have been better for Ford if the ad had just been ignored. In any case, it's sadly still very difficult for any African-American to win statewide office in the U.S. (I don't know if especially in the South).

My take on Joe is that he thinks himself a man of honor, and since he said he would stay a Dem he'll stay a Dem. As for cabinet post, why would he go to all this effort to retain his Senate seat only to get on a sinking ship. He also owes a lot of mainstream Dems for not (really) supporting Lamont. In any case, I never get the argument that a supposedly sleazy pol will do something sleazy just because someone who's done them favors "expects something in return." If they're that sleazy, they'll double-cross anyone if it benefits them. What are the Republicans going to do to Joe, whack him? (Oops, with this crowd it may be no joke.)
