NM-01: Madrid Concedes; Wilson's Win Official
GOP Rep. Heather Wilson has succeeded in hanging on to her seat in the face of a fierce challenge from Dem Patricia Madrid. CQ Politics reports that Madrid conceded defeat today after the count of ballots showed her lagging behind Wilson by all of 879 votes. Wilson's win means there are six House races which remain undecided. Two of them -- in Louisiana's 2nd District and in Texas' 23rd District -- will be resolved by runoffs in December.

This puts Wilson in a great position to take over for Domenici should he retire in '08. There are no real strong GOP contenders besides Wilson. I have no idea how Wilson won this race. Madrid was as strong a candidate as Dems could hope for.

Apparently Madrid had a terrible performance in the last debate, just before the election--literally stumbling over her words.
Domenici has already announced he will be seeking reelection. Don't know if the Dems will seriously contest him, unless of course if Richardson decides he wants to run for Senate rather than President.
This likely comes as a relief to the GOP--Wilson would almost certainly have run for Senate if Domenici had retired, and the Democrats would almost certainly take her House seat if it was open.

It may have been the robo-calls.

She had a very long pause before answering a question. It looked like she froze up for a minute. Wilson turned it into a campaign ad.
