New DSCC Ads Attack Republicans On Character, Bush

Two new ads from the DSCC: The first blasts Virginia Senator George Allen on what's become the campaign's central issue — Allen's own personal character. The second — an assault on Arizona Senator Jon Kyl — blisters him for voting in lockstep with President Bush. The latter ad is an interesting sign of just how much the southwestern — and national — political climate has changed: Who would have thought just six months ago that Arizona would be in play, or even that it would be hospitable territory for such an attack, given that it voted twice for the president? Watch them below:

Wow.

I like both of these ads.  I like the Kyl one much more than the one on Allen.  Just what is ethical slopiness?

The Kyl ad is crisp, concise and flows consistently. The opening is very powerful with the state symbol vs. WH and then it just gets to the core...Tired of him listening to them..instead of you...had enough?  Awesome.

Had the exact opposite reaction. Liked the Allen one better. Kyl one is a bit on the cheesy side for me, production-wise. But they're both solid.

I think the two are in different media environments. Given a barrage of negative advertising in Virginia, I think it makes sense to build the Allen ad out of quotes from VA newspapers ... and then that means you take what you can get. If "ethical sloppiness" is as close as the WaPo will come to saying Allen is a completely corrupt sleazeball, that's what you quote.

And the spread is important too ... the WaPo from Northern VA, Hampton Roads, which AFAIU is in the Tidewater (?), Roanoke in central western VA.

Just think...George Allen was being touted as Presidential material just four months ago...now he can meet John Kerry at a DC watering hole to talk about what might have been....

I agree that these ads are better than most, but they are very telling in that once again the DC Dems have only awakened moments before the election. The people who call the shots for our party in Washington are basically cowards who only have the courage to strike the foe at the very last moment and then only when they already can wiff victory in the air--not because of their doing mind, but in spite of it. Had these ads and others of the same tone been airing across the nation since Labor Day the Democratic Tsunami on Tuesday would be of historic proportions but alas these ads appear only at the last moment, again but perhaps this time not too late to make a difference. Whatever happens on election day there should be a major league purge of Democratic consultants and advisors who have counseled caution and timidity this year. That is how they can be identified. Those who have, since the spring counseled an agressive---go after them strategy are the ones you want to keep around in the future. The rest should be shown the door once and for all--for the sake of the nation and its future. We cannot afford anymore lilly livered campaigns!

I guess I'm just jaded but really neither seems all that great. Formulaic more than anything else.

These are the kinds of commercials an aggressive coordinated national campaign would have started running months ago.

The problem we Democrats have is that we are led by a bunch of insiders who want to stay insiders. They don't like making waves.

The first thing we need to do is find young people who are not afraid of a fight. How about all those young men and women returning from Iraq. A lot of them seem plenty tough and filled with integrity.

After next week's election I think the top topic of this and every other blog has to be how do we the regular citizens go about growing the grassroot organizations in all 50 states.

If we don't hold them accountable, next week winners are going to look just like the Republicans they replace in a very few years.

ethical slopiness?

1) arrest records from the 1970's while a student that have never been fully explained. Oh, and that deer head stuffed into a black families mail box!

2) sealed divorce papers that is the reason Allen's thugs beat up Mike Stark

3) granted some stock options just before he was to win his Senate seat then failed to report them according to Senate rules.

I don't even live in VA, so I'm sure there are more

They both stink.

Now here's an ad!

Yeah, Ned's a little stiff in the acting department, but it's just light years ahead of the boring, unimaginative, uninspiring pablum put out by the DSCC.

Agreed. Both these ads are more of the same. The Lamont ad on the other hand will get emailed.

Yo, DC marketing gurus, I'm friken 42 years old and know a tired old ass of an ad when I see one. Where are the young risk takers???

user-pic

Sorry to reiterate a bit but these are the kind of ads that will get TiVoed right over.

ethical slopiness?

this phrase/concept simply does not work for me. It does not bring to mind what you cited. I view ethical as either or. You are either ethical or unethical. I do not find a place for 'slopiness' when an individual is being challenged on ethics.

If "ethical sloppiness" is as close as the WaPo will come to saying Allen is a completely corrupt sleazeball, that's what you quote.

OIC. thanks...couldn't figure how they put together that phraseology.

yeah. I guess it is hard to be mean and nasty, unless it is self-defense,  when it is not your true character. Shame on those dems for being decent  fair-mined people with integrity and a conscious.

Had these ads and others of the same tone been airing across the nation since Labor Day the Democratic Tsunami on Tuesday would be of historic proportions but alas these ads appear only at the last moment, again but perhaps this time not too late to make a difference.

My problem with this is, and just what type of actions would you have to engage in to govern if that is what it takes to reach the constiuency. Is that then what you become, in order to stay in power?  Seems to me this is nothing more than a blueprint re-do of what we have with K street, Foley, Delay, Hastert, Reynolds, Ney, Boehner....they are more interested in staying in power than doing what is right....even when it comes to children being preyed on by a sexual predator.  So what it seems you are saying is that the ends justify the means...if that is not how the GOP has governed and created this morally deficient morass and national security quagmire and killing of citizens in Iraq..I do not know what is.

I choose not to get down in the mud or lay down with dogs just to get up dirty and flea infested..

Now here's an ad!
