IL-06: NRCC Sends Out "Welcome To America" Kit Attacking Duckworth

The NRCC has come up with a novel way of attacking Dem Tammy Duckworth on immigration: It's sent out a new mailing packed in a cardboard box, of all things, and the box is labeled, "Welcome to America Kit!" Inside this "kit," which you're supposed to think is for immigrants, is another mailing designed as if it were intended as an offer to illegals. It says: "Enter America illegally and get...Social Security benefits!" There is also a picture of Duckworth, which is obviously meant to suggest that she supports the "offers" to illegals on the mailing. She doesn't, however: Duckworth actually backs GOP Senator John McCain's immigration approach, which doesn't include benefits for illegals. View the box and its contents here.

I especially like the claim that Social Security money 'belongs to U.S. citizens'. Uh, no: legal residents who've worked in the US for 10 years or more are entitled to Social Security benefits, you ignorant (or more likely mendacious) bastards.

(Let alone that your Social Security checks are cashed by virtue of the benefits that illegal aliens pay, but will never receive.)

No doubt, the Republican Party will give this new desperate smear attempt to Fox News for wider distribution.

As I described in this comment, the McCain plan will indeed give billions of dollars of benefits to newly-legalized former illegal aliens.

The claim that she would reward illegal aliens with a "pathway to citizenship" is true in general; newly arrived illegal aliens who can't "prove" (perhaps with forged documents) that they haven't been here for some time period may not get that "pathway to citizenship", but around 85% will under the Senate bill.

The mailer also brings up the false claim that former illegal aliens would be sent to the back of the line, and it's correct that former illegal aliens would be put ahead of those in foreign countries who've been waiting for years to come here.

As for the comment about 10 years, under the totalization agreement pushed by the Bush administration, illegal aliens could get benefits after as little as 1.5 years of work. I don't know the current status of that agreement, but it's separate from the McCain or other amnesties.

You know, I think the most bothersome thing about this latest attack on Duckworth is not that it sinks to a new low. Republicans have demonstrated that they will sink so low they are at risk of meeting themselves coming the other way thus completeing a full 360 degrees of scuminess.

No, it's that this mailer took a large effort to create, package and mail, and that all along the way were people who have decided that libel and defamation of a candidate of demonstrated character is an ok thing. I honestly don't know how some people can live with themselves.

Since this is the active thread on Duckworth, might as well put this here: why doesn't the Veterans of Foreign Wars PAC just confirm that it's a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RNC, since if they can't endorse Duckworth, what's the point of their endorsement except to please the RNC?

It just goes to show the kind of money the Natioonal Republican party is throwing at this race. Tammy's going to beat Roskam and a lot of other Dems are going to squeek
by because the NRCC and RNC just wasted a lot resources here on counter productive crap like this.
