First Muslim In Congress Snubs Bush, Meets With Big Labor Instead

Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to Congress, hasn't even taken office yet, but he already appears to be charting his own route in Congress. The Associated Press reports that Ellison skipped a swanky private White House reception for other freshman Congressman hosted by President Bush -- and went to a reception for the AFL-CIO instead. "It wasn't even a close call," Ellison says. "Maybe one day I'll get to meet the president. He's the president, and I respect him in his role as the president, but I have exceedingly sharp differences with him on a policy level." Somehow we doubt that Ellison's complete lack of interest in hobnobbing with Bush will make him any more popular with his many conservative critics.

Ellison's Republican opponent got 21% of the vote.

I enjoyed litting for Ellison. With Bush's ingrained hate of Islam, I can't imagine that Ellison would ever want to meet with Bush-- he'd smell the sulfur and want to split!

user-pic

Good for him. Nice to see someone choose labor over the perks and trappings of power.

user-pic

There's someone with the right priorities for a Democrat.

user-pic

Ellison is starting to look a lot like Wellstone. Going to a labor event over meeting the President? That's something Wellstone would have done.

user-pic

This guy is the real deal. Take a look at his website. Someone who fights to decriminalize homelessness? Fights to give ex-offenders back their voting rights? Thank goodness we have this sort of individual being elected to Congress, for a change, instead of the Tom Delays. What a decent man. What a relief.

Labor unions have taken such a hit from both the right and left in this country. Corporotacracy and outsourcing may kill off the rest of the unions unless American workers vote in more people with ideas such as this Ellison.

I live in Ellison's district. He is an awesome progressive. And, he knows who he is. No pretense. We are lucky to have such a great Congressman!

user-pic

Go Keith, go labor! This act will make you even more popular with your many supporters back home in what may be the nation's most liberal Congressional district: MN-05. We didn't send you there to sit on that fool's lap. Let's start funding that reelection campaign - now.

i jost hope he does not fly on any airplanes. remember wellstone.

As a native Minnesotan who has thanfully escaped the barron hinterland, I can say that Ellison is a good guy.

He is also a moron.

What we do not need on Capitol Hill are more contrarions. If other Democrats act like Ellison, the elections will have gained the American people nothing.

ILLEGITIMI NON CARBORUNDUM

I have read the most vile comments about Ellison & his constituents while surfing the right wing blogs.

I'm sure this act of integrity towards your supporters & snub of W. will produce even more venom from these foul mouthed bigots.

Don't let the bastards grind you down.

user-pic

Are you kidding? The right wing will only accelerate its vicious and scurrilous attack machine now that they've suffered an electoral setback. They know what the Democrats refuse to accept: what wins elections is attack, attack, attack, derision, and attack.

You're worried about Democrats being "contrarions" [sic]? What the elections "have gained the American people" is a brief break from the right wing's mission to establish a fascist, one-party state. They are never going to be appeased by making nice with them. Their motivating forces are hatred and destruction, and their appeal is to people's fear and prejudices.

Any talk of cooperation or bipartisanship from the Republicans is hot air. While it may be useful to APPEAR bipartisan, the only proper goal of the Democrats is the complete marginalizing of the right wing.
Would you have urged "bipartisanship" in Germany in the '30s?

Ellison's decision reminds me of the similar event in November 1990, when Wellstone first went to DC as Senator Elect, and went with then Majority Leader Mitchell to the new member reception. (Paul was the only New Democratic Senator that year.) They were in the receiving line, and GHWBush, using a stage whisper, asked, "Who is that Chicken Shit with Mitchell?" I would not be at all surprised if Keith doesn't remember that disrespect, and he will not be swayed by some sort of fancy wine and cheese thingie.

user-pic

Did anyone see Ellison on Glenn Beck's show?

I posted about it here on my blog. Basically Beck asks him to "prove to me that you are not working with the enemy"

Quite disgusting if you ask me.

Contrarions? So Ellison should be against his constituents, for the head of the party opposed to everything about him, for fiscal irresponsibility, for federal industry oversight by industry insiders, for impossible to win wars, for the rape of consumers, etc etc and that somehow will empower the American people?

Go on about morons.

Tom

Comparing the Republicans to the Nazi's is a little over the top, eh?

Also, you seem to be assuming that all Republicans are Neocons. This is akin to saying every Democrat is a Communist.

The worst of the Neocon bite is over. The Congress has switched hands, Rumsfeld is out for good, and Dick Cheney/Karl Rove have pretty much shot their wad.

This talk of a clandestine effort by the GOP to create a one party Fascist state is pure paranoia. One radical branch of the party, the Neocons, attempted to increase their influence by skirting certain measures of the Constitution.

Their 'party' is over. Even Bush has signaled a shift in thinking over the past 6 months. Rove was demoted, Rumsfeld ousted, and changes in the Iraq policy will be implimented upon completion of the Iraq Study Group.

For the Neocons, the glory days of 2005 are a thing of the past.

user-pic

Bi-partisanship is not even possible.

The Republicans aren't interested in bi-partisan anything. What the CALL bi-partisanship is simply Democrats accepting their positions on issues.

There's no real compromise at all. Take a look at Bush.

It's not 2 weeks after the election and already he's rejected the mandate from 60% of the American people to change course in Iraq. Instead he's going to send 20,000 MORE troops! That position is supported by 10% of the people and about 90% of the wooden-headed "experts" on the main-stream media, who never stop nodding their approval for more war, and saying things like "we can't leave now because that would enable the terrorists."

We just had an election on that exact issue you fools! Bush campaigned all over the country arguing that we can't "cut and run" from Iraq because that would embolden the terrorists. The American people overwhelmingly rejected that position and swept the Republicans out of power.

The choice was perfectly clear. Stay the course with Bush or withdraw. Americans knew perfectly well what they were doing and they chose to withdraw from Iraq. 60% want to either withdraw ALL troops IMMEDIATELY or to withdraw SOME troops starting in 2007. But these morons keep talking as if the overwhelming majority of the American people want doesn't matter, because "of course, we can't do that." This is exactly what's wrong with the media. They just have total contempt for democracy.

user-pic
"Rove was demoted, Rumsfeld ousted, and changes in the Iraq policy will be implimented upon completion of the Iraq Study Group."

Say What???? What part of "20,000 more troops" for Iraq so that we can have "one more push" don't you understand?

Bush will "implement" the Baker study group recommendations? He said "I welcome the study group recommendations" so long as withdrawal is off the table. A total pre-emptive shot. "I won't withdraw, what else have you got?"

"Well, Mr. President. We can re-arrange the deck chairs on the Hindenburg."

"Sounds, great, let's announce that to the American people. We're going to 'change course' on Iraq. And the change we're going to do is to ESCALATE!"

That's right! 60% of the American people want to get out of Iraq, about evenly divided between those who want to get out immediately, and those who want to withdraw some troops in 2007 and all of the troops in stages, yet Bush hears "let's escalate."

It's just as if your entire family had an intervention about your drinking problem and you say "I accept what you say. Clearly I do have a problem." Everybody in the room smiles and relaxes and they say "so you're going to get help you need then?" and you say "absolutely! I'll go talk to the counselors right away!"

Then everybody thinks you've heard and understood the message, that you need to stop drinking, because of course, that's what the entire conversation was about!

But, no! When you meet with the counselors you say "first of all stopping drinking is off the table! What else have you got for me?"

Then you announce to your startled family "what I really need is not to slow down, let alone stop drinking! In fact to prove that I've heard what you're saying, I'm going to have ONE MORE BIG BLOWOUT BENDER! And THEN I'll stop, once I get good and liquored up once and for all!"

But, of course, our situation over Iraq is much worse than that analogy, because then we have to imagine not only that the alcohol treatment counselors conclude "well, since you've flatly rejected going cold-turkey, we'll all agree that what you need is one more Big Bender", we would also have to imagine that every "expert" who publicly comments on the situation all say to the startled family members "well, of course he can't stop drinking now, because he needs that liquor!"

user-pic
Comparing the Republicans to the Nazi's is a little over the top, eh?

He never said that. This is typical. Distorting the meaning in order to change the subject.

user-pic

Keith is doing what we sent him there to do - Putting people over Politics. Go Keith go.

user-pic

The whole Beck thing is quite disgusting. It's insulting to Keith. And, it's insulting to those of us who supported & voted for him. On so many levels. Apparently, in Beck's view, Minnesotans are all too dumb to even know who our candidate is. Smacks of East Coast elitism to me (isn't that what the "right" always rails on?) This jerk probably can't even find Minneapolis on a map.

By the way, Minnesota led the nation in voter turnout in 2004 and 2006.

user-pic

Wellstone was a contrarian too. Seems to me the contrarians were the only ones smart enough to vote against our fiasco in Iraq.

user-pic

What, you're saying the freedom-and-democracy-haters are out-voting us? *cries*

user-pic

So, this is the guy Beck insulted. I guess Beck got the attention that he wanted. I think Fox people figure this " say something insane" it will help ratings. He's not a Fox guy is he? He's a CNN guy! Oh no there are two of them now! Help!

I wouldn't go across the street to see Bush so I completely understand meeting with organized labor. In fact I questioned why there was any interest in the story at all when I saw that Ellison went to meet with labor reps. I've been a union person all my life and know they can do more me than Bush ever would. Why go see him?

user-pic

Interesting that you cite a supposed snub of Bush and ignore the much more revealing fact that he's now snubbing the CAIR meeting at which he was supposed to talk.

In other news, Senator Borah denies that he was planning to address the German-American Bund....

user-pic

As for the vile and unremarkable hate posts on wingnut forums, the wackinazis will always, always, always find someone to hate, because in their sad little lives, this is the only real emotion open to them.

Just read Free Republic for a taste of the pathetic multitudes swimming in their own putrid hatred.
