Dems Will Move To Bring Some Troops Home From Iraq
The new Democratic majority will quickly move to bring at least a token number of troops home from Iraq when Congress convenes in January, the Associated Press reports:
First stop next year will be legislation calling for an undetermined number of troops to come home immediately. Though Democrats are divided over exactly what to propose, they say their effort will send a loud political signal to disgruntled U.S. voters, and to Iraqis to assume more responsibility...Aides say when the new Congress convenes in January, Democrats plan to call for troops to begin coming home from Iraq and to increase money for veterans and training special operations forces.
One interesting dynamic to watch: How Joe Lieberman -- who opposes withdrawal -- will react to such moves. His allies are struggling mightily to spin his win as a victory of the mainstream over extremism. Yet exit polls showed that an astonishing 63% of Connecticut voters favor withdrawing "some" or "all" troops from Iraq. Only 31% oppose withdrawal.
So: If some sort of vote for withdrawal comes to the floor, will Lieberman support the wishes of mainstream Connecticut, or will he vote against withdrawal, thereby representing less than a third of Connecticut voters?

The Democrats need to proceed softly softly, not like the "A Team" barging in and taking over. I too want troops out soon, but what is the plan.
Senator John Warner is not an ideologue, let's see what his hearings uncover. Robert Gates (new Defense Secretary) will also have confirmation hearings coming up quickly and there is still the Iraq Study Group and their expected recommendations.
Don't obsess on Liebermann, the election is over.

I like the increase in money for veterans. We owe those who served in this misguided war more than we can ever possibly repay. If Nancy Pelosi wants, she can raise my taxes to pay for it.

Right! They're going to send the troops some pre-paid airline tickets. Maybe there'll be a raffle.
I guess I'll just have to assume that the AP writer got it wrong -- as usual.
