CNN: Trent Lott Elected Number Two In Senate
Trent Lott's comeback from disgrace -- he was ousted as Senate Majority Leader in 2002 after a racially charged gaffe -- is official. CNN is reporting that Lott has been elected Senate Minority Whip by a single vote. So praising segregation is no longer a liability in today's GOP, as long as it happened a few years ago.

Perhaps it is more likely that praising segregation is not a liability to executing the duties and responsibilities of senate minority whip. Just as acquiesing to monica lewinskis predacious actions were not a liability to executing the duties and governance responsibilities as President of the United States

An apologist for American apartheid as a Republican party leader. And he couldn't have done it without "Maverick" John McCain.
Makes you wonder about the future of a party that is hopelessly stuck in the past.

...Any more than being a member of the KKK in one's past is no bar to being re-elected as a Democratic Senator in West Virginia eight times is. Or is it only when Republicans have misbegotten pasts that they're worthy of being smeared on this website?
Let's face it: a Whip needs certain qualities that Trent Lott has and Lamar Alexander does not; not least authority and an ability to instil discipline - especially in a potentially fractious minority. Lamar Alexander is an amiable man but he's no whip and not renowned for imposing himself - as was shown in his weak, feeble, non-descript, failed presidential campaigns.

Well I for one have no complaints.
Its nice to see that the events of the last five years or so have had absolutely no effect on the Republican Party leadership.

"Perhaps it is more likely that praising segregation is not a liability to executing the duties and responsibilities of senate minority whip." Especially if the duties include blocking legislation that may help the rights and economic future of black Americans.
Oh, right, I know Clinton is totally comparable, since his responsibilities included passage of the laws encouraging free love, co-sponsored by Representative John Lennon (D-The Dakota, both north and south). How did I forget?

There is no comparison between the issues you cite. One can forgive youthful indiscretions (like drunk driving and cocaine use or marijuana, even if you inhale). Its the attitudes that survive to maturity that matter, especially when one has a position of power and influence.

I'm not very religious, but when I heard that Bush, McConnell, and Lott will be at the head of the Republican party in 2008 I went down on my knees and praised the Lord.
It's the Trifecta, the perfect Republican Axis of Evil for Democrats to run against in 2008.
Yee-haw!

Well now that you put it like this...you have a point. Gotcha.
I have no beef with Clinton. I just could not connect the remarks with the duties. and used Clinton as an example to illustrate the same disconnection.
You were able to connect the dots with the remarks and the duties for me...thanks
