CNN: Mel Martinez To Head Republican National Committee

CNN is reporting that Florida GOP Senator Mel Martinez has accepted an offer to become head of the Republican National Committee. "Under the arrangement, Martinez will remain in office and serve as the party's lead spokesman as well as take a major role in fundraising and political outreach," CNN says, citing three unnamed sources. No statement yet from Martinez. More in a bit.

Update: Here's the Associated Press's story. The AP recalls Martinez's involvement in the Terri Schiavo fiasco, which revealed his (or at least his staff's) less-than-impeccable political judgment:

Martinez started slowly in the Senate where he was embarrassed by a one-page unsigned memo that originated in his office. Written by a Martinez aide and disavowed by Senate Republicans, the memo laid out the political benefits to getting involved in the fate of Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman whose end-of-life battle became a rallying cry for conservatives.

"This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue," said the memo. Its author resigned.

What happened to Michael Steele?

Mr Steele and MD Gov Ehrich were caught handing out misleading fliers labelling themselves as Democrats. The Governor's wife greeted the buses that transported the homeless people (from PA) who were paid to hand out the fliers. Yes Steele participated in a scam in which out of state homeless people were paid to hand out fradulent campaign material.
When questioned by Donna Brazille on CNN, and local MD media, including the Baltimore Sun, Mr Steele was not ashamed. His response was that this was a dirty trick similar to those played by Democratic party embers (no examples given). Steele also said that while some fiers had pictures of Steele and Kwame Mfume, the Black Democratic Senatorial candidate who lost to Senator-elect Cardin, the ultimate winner of retiring Paul Sarbanes Senate seat in the primary, he was merely targeting "Steele Democrats". These were Democratic voters who would support Steele's agenda.
Once your head stops spinning from the expanation, you can see why the RNCC felt better to have a scum-bucket with ties to Abramoff, rather than a scum-bucket with no credibility.
Steele's campaign commercials were funny and entertaining, but supplied no true content regarding his agenda.
Bottom line, boxing promoter Don King was a Steele supporter. That alone should question Steele's decision making.

So if the best the Republicans can come with is Steele Martinez, you have to wonder how this crew of bribe eating sadsacks managed to stick us in Iraq and maintain power the last six years.

We do need a better press corp.

Michael Steele may well end up in the cabinet replacing Alphonso Jackson and becoming Secretary of HUD. Jackson is an ethical time bomb waiting to explode...and Steele can work hard to find permanent housing for his election day "volunteers".
