MO-SEN: RNC Sinks $730,000 Into Attacks On McCaskill
There's been plenty of talk in political circles to the effect that the Republican National Committee is stepping into key Senate races because it doesn't think the NRSC is up to the job of winning them. Well, here's another sign of this: The RNC today sank $731,968.29 into negative ads and "research" (read: dirt-digging) against Dem challenger Claire McCaskill, records filed today with the Federal Election Commission show. The RNC's huge cash dump on behalf of GOP Senator Jim Talent -- who's trailing McCaskill in some recent polls -- comes as national GOP strategists appear to be halting their investment for now on the Ohio Senate race and instead are focusing on Virginia, Tennessee, and of course Missouri as key to holding the Senate.

I think this may end up being the closest Senate race. Donate now! I just did.
McCaskill is a great candidate and trounced the inaptly named Talent on Meet the Press yesterday.

If Democrats want to win the Senate they need to get behind McCaskill now. The Republicans are posting wall to wall negative ads about McCaskill. She doesn't have the resources needed to counter them. Folks, she can win. Please send her some money to counter the Republican fat cats. If we have any hope of winning the Senate that hope runs through Missouri. 500,000 democrats sending her $10 would give her a fighting chance. Now is the time. Not next week.

I'd say McCaskill narrowly won yesterday's debate with talent, though she came off as a bit less polished on the issues and seemed to run out of talking points in the waning minutes. The most ridiculous bit of demagoguery was Talent's insidious invocation of her "tax shelters." The freakin' tax code was written with the assumption that all taxpayers will seek to minimize their tax burden within the parameters of the law and as far as I could tell, Talent wasn't saying she did anything more. So if I claim my kids as a deduction, am I somehow engaging in nefarious tax shelters, Senator? What a bunch of malarkey!

Zogby just came out with Talent at 50% and McCaskill at 47% (probably within the margin of error.) Talent hasn't done that well very often in this race. The Republicans are sinking millions on millions into this campaign. The Democrats don't seem to be spending anything like that amount. I am coming to the conclusion that if the Democrats don't pony up lots of money right now, not in a week, they are going to lose this race and their best chance for the Senate.

I just watched the October 18 debate in Kansas City. You know, Talent isn't a bad man, but I don't want a senator who sides with the President 94% of the time.
As to the tax shelter thing, I thought that was silly too. He didn't claim anything was illegal about any of them. Frankly, given his wife is a tax lawyer, I bet she would love to have McCaskill's husband as a client.
I thought she defused the failure to pay property taxes for three years and the meth lab allegations very well. I am glad she waited tell the end to explain the facts. It made him look petty.
If McCaskill wins, and I think she will, she will win because Talent is such a lapdog for the Bush administration. For goodness sake, he is a United States Senator. Any United States Senator who is so in lock step with any President doesn't need to be returned.
