DCCC Pumps $3.8 Million Into House Races
Here comes a massive wave of TV ads from Democrats. The DCCC has just pumped a staggering $3.8 million into nearly two dozen House races across the country, new filings with the Federal Election show. The cash — all of which was plunked down this week — will fund first-time media buys against incumbent Connecticut Republican Nancy Johnson and on behalf of Peter Welch, the Dem running to defend the Vermont seat of Dem-favoring Independent Bernie Sanders, as well as funding ads in hard-fought races in roughly a dozen other states.

Strange as it may sound, I have to hope that none -- or very few -- of these ads touch on Mark Foley. I know that story broke late last week, but it doesn't take long to whip up a quick, cheap attack ad these days. No Democrat ought to touch that issue with anything other than the greatest care; it's doing enough damage to Republicans on its own, and any overtly partisan push by a Democratic candidate or group will be too much. (The Dem. candidate who lost a son, and whose name escapes me now, is about the only candidate who COULD legitimately push on this one. But she's a very rare exception (thankfully.)) Let the GOP tumble down the Capitol Building's steps on its own -- we don't need to push them.

Can anyone in Vermont explain why Dems seem to be having trouble locking up the congressional seat? That would seem like an easy win in VT.

I lived in VT for a while. It's an interesting place. One of those places that, deep down, considers itself completely different than the rest of the country. It's deeply liberal, but also deeply personal in how it chooses candidates. How you connect to voters and how "Vermont-y" you are matters a great deal. There is an incredibly popular Republican governor running for reelection and pulling some others with him. It all adds up, and I'm guessing (don't know) Welch is running a piss-poor campaign. It's alright. In the end, all he has to do is remind people that Rainville is a Republican, and all will be well.
