CA-04: In Freak-Show Debate, Doolittle Calls Brown's Iraq Experience "Ridiculous Story"
GOP Rep John Doolittle put on quite a show last night at his debate with Dem challenger Charlie Brown. First Doolittle asserted that Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction. Then he dismissed Brown's recounting of his military service and how it convinced him there were no WMD in Iraq — Brown's an Air Force vet who flew recon missions over Iraq when it was under sanctions — as a "ridiculous story." And perhaps best of all, here's what he said when an audience member drew attention to the fact that he'd hired his own wife, Julie Doolittle, to raise campaign cash for him at a 15 percent commission: "They want to drag my poor wife into this." In citing his 26-year U.S. Air Force career, Brown, a retired lieutenant colonel, mentioned his service in Saudi Arabia mapping surveillance flights in Iraq's "no-fly zone." He said the experience convinced him there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and that the war was a misguided diversion from the war on terror...Arguing that Iraq is central to the war on terror, Doolittle responded: "This is a guy who had weapons of mass destruction. President Clinton said he had weapons of mass destruction. Vice President Gore said he had weapons of mass destruction...But Lt. Col. Charlie Brown who flew reconnaissance missions says there were no weapons of mass destruction.
"Why didn't you pick up the phone and call the commander in chief? Do you really expect us to sit here and believe that ridiculous story?"

At one point, criticizing the challenger over Brown's membership in the American Civil Liberties Union, Doolittle went as far as to suggest that Brown was supporting a notorious sex ring. He said the ACLU had protected the interests of the North American Man/Boy Love Association."Mr. Doolittle knows more about man's love than I do with his support of Congressman Foley," Brown fired back, referring to allegations that Republican leaders may have covered up the Foley e-mail scandal.

One woman asked Doolittle if he would support a law to ban an "unethical" practice: hiring his own wife, Julie Doolittle, to raise campaign funds for a 15 percent commission.The company of Doolittle's wife, Sierra Dominion Financial Services, also was paid $66,000 by Abramoff for projects including a Washington, D.C., fundraiser that was canceled.
"This is typical of the slanderous personal attacks," Doolittle said, responding to the caller. "They want to drag my poor wife into this."
Man, I had no idea debates could be so entertaining. I've been going to the wrong ones.

Man, just outright lies from Doolittle! That's ridiculous. I hope Brown can make some hay out of it.
This must be a ridiculously gerrymandered district to keep Doolittle in office. Anyone know the baseline or the 2000/2004 Presidential vote breakdown?

Doolittle's district (CA-04) is very red (I live just outside of it), went about 65-35% for Bush in 04. Heavy Mormon concentration which goes heavily for Doolittle (who's Mormon). Then those rural Repubs. Brown's only hope is to get all Dems, most Independents and skim off about 30% of the Republicans, the "moderates" (they exist because in the primary Doolittle's challenger was a certified Repub moderate (mayor of Auburn) and got 34%. Doolittle is one of the most arrogant, unethical Repubs in Congress, and that's saying a lot. The funniest line is the last one in the Bee article: "my poor wife' because Mrs Doolittle skims off personally 15% of every campaign dollar hubby raises - not "illegal" but highly unethical.
A few bucks to Charlie Brown would be appreciated.
