VA-SEN: Allen Ad: Webb's The Bigot!
GOP Senator George Allen -- under fire for allegations of racism -- has just released a new TV ad up which tries to paint Dem opponent Jim Webb as a misogynist. The ad, which bashes Webb for his 1979 essay opposing women in the Naval Academy, features one female Academy grad after another hammering Webb. One says, "It was demoralizing from a perspective that only a woman could understand." Another rejoins, "I really have to make it very clear to the women of Virginia who may be considering voting for this man, that he is no advocate for women." Allen's also rolling out a companion site, Webb Against Women.

A very powerful ad -- up until the moment when one hears "I'm George Allen, and I approve this message." It's like the 13th chime of a clock, calling into doubt everything that has preceded it.

I hear his next ad is going to accuse Webb of the worst kind of intolerance -- lactose intolerance!

Sounds like the gravest sort of threat.
What an inspiring message Allen is sending out! He's a bigger bigot than I am.
By the way the latest Mason-Dixon poll shows a tie. Allen is headed south - so to speak.
Best, Terry

Jim Webb opposed women at the Naval Academy in the 1970s, but George Allen opposed women at VMI in the 1990s. Why would Allen want bring this up?

Does this ad strike anyone else as almost identical in basic set-up, visuals and tone as the Swift Boat ads from 2004? I'd be willing to bet they used the same firm to make them.

What's to doubt? Was it not telling the truth? Did Webb NOT write that essay? Are all those women from the Academy LIARS?
It is a powerful ad, regardless of who approves of it or not. Will you shun a truth because you do not like the messenger?

My favorite part of the ad was trying to figure out what Webb actually said. Pretty sigificant omission. The ad is the equivalent to filming a high school clique. You know you should hate the new kid; you just can't explain why. And this is Repub attack ad 101: Heavy on creating a "feeling," totally empty on substance.
