TX-22: More Chaos In DeLay's Wake: Dem Won't Run In Special Election

Things are getting more and more chaotic in the race for the seat of outgoing Rep. Tom DeLay. Today Democratic congressional candidate Nick Lampson announced that he won’t be running in the special election to replace DeLay for the remainder of his term. As you may recall, the special election will be held as the same day as the actual election -- Nov. 7 -- for who gets the seat for a full two-year term. So if Lampson wins the general election, someone else will serve out DeLay's term.

Lampson's decision drew a rebuke from Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, the write-in candidate supported by the Republican party, who said that she didn’t “know what Nick Lampson is doing or thinking” and that she wanted to represent the district as soon as possible.

But Lampson retorted that if Republicans "had truly been concerned about the interest of Southeast Texans, we would have had this special election back in May."

Smart move by Lampson. Very very smart. This gives GOPers the opportunity to vote Republican (in the special), while no Republican appears on the ballot that matters. This makes it that much harder for the Repubs.

This is going to give the TX GOP strategy gurus an aneurysm. Good for Lampson for not taking the bait.

The GOP's only hope is to create a race between Gibbs and Lampson. And since these two *still* will not appear on the same ballot, there is no need for Lampson to even acknowledge her write-in campaign in the general.
