SC-GOV: Southern Paper Says Dems Cracking GOP Stronghold in South

South Carolina has become a GOP stronghold in the South, but a venerable daily newspaper, The State, is now reporting that widespread disenchantment with Gov. Mark Sanford suggests that Dems are eroding the GOP's once-automatic dominance in key swing counties. The Dem resurgence appears to be caused by job losses and gridlock between Sanford and his own co-partisans in the GOP-led Legislature. More interesting, the paper sees this trend as a sign that old-line Dems driven into the arms of the GOP by racial and cultural politics may be "coming back." As one GOPer puts it, speaking of Sanford's Dem challenger: "I see a lot of Republicans voting for Tommy Moore."

It is only a matter of time before the GOP/right-wing coalition stays cohesive. The members of their coalition are fundamentally at odds with each other. The only thing keeping them together was lust for power and greed, not ideology.
