RI-SEN: Unprecedented Turnout Lends Chafee Comfort
GOP Senator Lincoln Chafee, take comfort: It looks as if there's extremely high turnout in Rhode Island today, which means independents may be coming out to prevent defeat at the hands of conservative primary challenger Steve Laffey. The sole polling center in Richmond is reporting unprecedented turnout, and a polling official tells the Providence Journal-Bulletin that the town has "never" seen turnout matching that of today's primary.

Well here's one independent (called "unaffiliated" in Rhode Island) who voted in the Republican primary to cast a vote for Laffey. Hopefully there are more like me.

Earlier today the Chafee Campaign alleged that Laffey poll watchers were intimidating voters, FNC's Carl Cameron went to check it out and found out it was false. Part of the transcript below... and my cab driver this morning in providence said he'll vote for laffey today so whitehouse would win in the fall -wonder how many of them there are???
From FNC's Carl Cameron:
This morning Lincoln Chafee cast his, cast his ballot for himself. This after having spent some 5 million dollars in the race. For the most part, bashing his republican opponent as someone who he has called in his ads, untrustworthy, unpredictable and unreliable. Mr. Chafee trying to make the
race about Mayor Laffey's personality. Mayor Laffey, the Mayor of Cranston, two terms there, took a bankrupt city and has by his accounts made it one of the most livable in the country, has been neck in neck in the polls with the republican incumbent, waging a feisty change and anti incumbent race. Mr.
Laffey sounds an awful lot like a Democrat when he says it is time for a new direction in Washington and that Lincoln Chafee has been part of the problem. Both men cast their ballots today in this tumultuous battle and raised the stakes. In the last 24 hours, the campaigns have both clashed about alleged voter intimidation.
Senator Chafee wanted to have volunteer observers at the polls in Cranston, Laffey's home town. That was an administrative problem that had them actually in council chambers last night, battling back and forth. This morning, Senator Chafee's campaign has alleged voter intimidation tactics on behalf of Mr. Laffey, a few towns south of here in Providence where we are now. We actually went to one, North Kingstown, Rhode Island to check out the allegations from the Chafee campaign.
Police and voter officials, administrative officials at the election place told us that there had been no such intimidation evidence in their view and they had been there since the poll opened this morning. So both sides throwing everything they possibly can at one another. Steve Laffey has call Lincoln Chafee one of the weakest senators on security in the entire senate including democrats.
