WI-GOV: Green Fights Back Against Election Board Woes
A few days ago GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Green was ordered by a state Elections Board to get rid of over $400,000 in contributions from out of state PACs -- a blow some thought would destroy his campaign. But all the Dem elation may have been premature. Today the Wisconsin State Journal reports that Green isn't complying with the order, and the paper suggests that he may be able to appeal it with relative ease.
The rule Green is charged with violating is that PAC contributors to his federal campaign fund were not registered in the state. But it turns out that the rule was not adopted by the state Elections Board until shortly after he'd transfered the money to his state campaign account -- hence the likelihood of a successful appeal.
It's true that Green could still be liable for exceeding the limit on PAC funds to a gubernatorial candidate — estimated to be over $180,000 before the current reporting period began. And while that too is uncertain, it's also true that any litigation would be bad politically for Green, since it would spotlight how much of his war chest has been based on large contributions from Washington interest groups.
