VA-02: GOPer Drake: Katrina Victims "Didn't Want To Leave"

On the eve of the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, GOP Rep. Thelma Drake was asked by an alternative weekly in Virginia why so many people were left behind in New Orleans when the Hurricane struck. The question referred to residents unable to evacuate who took refuge in the Superdome, as well as people trying to leave on foot who were blocked by armed police from adjacent towns. Drake's response? "They didn't want to leave."

Apparently Drake does want to leave. Leave Congress, that is.

And Drake justifies the ineptitude by blaming the victims.

What a selective memory.

What about Bush saying New Orleans was calling the evacuees home? LA is not ready to receive them back. The article clearly shows that they need love and care. Why can't they stay where they are until a better time (ie the 450,000 in Texas)?

Drake is typical of those on the right who blame Poverty on the poor. Remember Barbara Bush suggestion that displaced People were "Better off".
This is the ugly snake head of Racism that pervades the repiglican party..

It used to be just Rush Limbaugh et al. that talked like that. Then Newt Gingrich started. Now that's the usual discourse from Republicans. It used to be there were a few Republican wingnuts.

Now its hard to find one who is not a wingnut.

What happened to honesty as a basic value in this country?

Gretna Bridge

Yeah, during the evacuation of NOLA, there were deputies threatening to shoot poor black people at Gretna bridge who didn't evacuate into their fair parish but would those people listen?
Nooo!!!
They just HAD to go back into the poisoned water where they used to have homes!
[some events did not actually happen that way :-)]
