CT-SEN: Lieberman Defended Wal-Mart's Refusal To Sell "Inappropriate" Music -- Remember?
This morning, Maura at My Left Nutmeg found that Joe Lieberman was rallying against Wal-Mart while taking their money. But here's the question: Why is Wal-mart donating to the Democrat?
Here's a possible answer: Lieberman defended Wal-mart in a big way when the chain came under fire for refusing to sell music it deemed inappropriate. Here's what Lieberman had to say in 1997 about Wal-mart (courtesy of the Sonoma County Independent):
"Some of the rap music and other music is just the most violent, anti-woman, pro-drug stuff that I've ever heard. So three cheers for Wal-Mart," says Lieberman. "There is freedom of speech in this country--we've always said that in our appeals to the record companies to try and clean up their act--and just as there's free speech, in a free market Wal-Mart doesn't have to carry anything it doesn't want to carry, and of course that has an effect because they're such a big retailer." (Emphasis added.)
Maybe that explains it.

Well, Joe is a principled man. I expect a rousing defense of the retail giant from the podium tomorrow.

Yes, and "in a free market Wal-Mart doesn't have to" provide health insurance for its workers either, eh?
Think Joe will explain that at the rally?
