CT-SEN: Hillary Speaks Out On Lieberman

So I've just obtained a transcript of some remarks that Hillary Clinton made to reporters this morning in Harlem about Joe Lieberman and the situation in Connecticut. Here are the interesting and relevant bits:

Q: Senator, do you think Sen Lieberman should (drop his campaign?) ...?

CLINTON: He has to search his conscience and decide what is best for Connecticut and for the Democratic Party and then do what's right. But as I've said I will be supporting the person chosen by the Democrats in Connecticut. And I will do whatever I can to make sure we have a Democratic Senator from Connecticut....

Q: Do you think [Lieberman] hurts the Democratic party by staying in the race?

A: Well he's going to have to make that decision. And I hope he, obviously thinks hard about it. But, as I've said since the 4th of July, I will be supporting the winner of the Democratic primary and that is Ned Lamont. I am going to contribute to him, I'm going to do whatever I can to help him be elected.

Full transcript after the jump.

Hillary's full remarks:

Q: Joe Lieberman said the Primary was half time, he's in it to the end, what do you believe, what is your reaction to that decision and whom do you support?

CLINTON: Well, I understand his feelings, obviously, it's a difficult time for him and for his family, but I said, more than a month ago, on July 4th, that I would support the winner of the Democratic primary and that is what I intend to do in every way that I am requested to do so. I'll be sending a contribution to Mr Lamont today, I've called to offer whatever support he needs as he continues his campaign to become the Democratic Senator from Connecticut?

Q: Are there any lessons ma'am, for other Senators who are in similar positions...?

CLINTON: Well, I, you know, I'll leave that to the political pundits. I think that, I'm running for reelection in New York. New Yorkers are aware of what I've done and the positions I've taken and the work that I've tried to do on their behalf and that's my focus. I'm going to do the very best I can to reach out to as many people as possible here in the city and around the state, and hopefully in November win reelection.

And I will do whatever I can to make sure we have a Democratic Senator from Connecticut.

Q: Last night's vote was a referdum for the war in Iraq?

CLINTON: I think every election is different, every state is different. Circumstances are different. Again I will leave that to other people to speculate on, but I think what's important is that voters in Connecticut have spoken and I certainly am going to do what I can to help Mr. Lamont become the next senator from Connecticut.

Q: How do you feel that Pres Clinton lent his support to Sen. Lieberman and he still lost the primary?

CLINTON: Well, I think that Joe Lieberman has been a friend of ours for more than 30 years and I supported Joe Lieberman. I contributed to Joe Lieberman. He's someone whom my husband and I go back to all the way to the time we were in law school. And we both supported him and we have, you know, a lot of years in that friendship. Now the voters in Connecticut have made their decision and I think that decision should be respected.

Q: Do you think [Lieberman] hurts the Democratic party by staying in the race?

CLINTON: Well he's going to have to make that decision. And I hope he, obviously thinks hard about it. But, as I've said since the 4th of July, I will be supporting the winner of the Democratic primary and that is Ned Lamont. I am going to contribute to him, I'm going to do whatever I can to help him be elected. Thank you all.

I would hope that President Clinton discussed this possibiility before he endorsed Lieberman, and that he will now call him to drive the point about party loyalty home.

I imagine everyone who endorsed Lieberman probably told him that they would be supporting the nominee of the party and not to expect any help if he ran as an Independent.
