CT-SEN: Dean Calls On Lieberman To Quit Race

NYT:

Howard Dean, the Democratic national chairman, called on Mr. Lieberman to quit the race, and in an interview said he would be disappointed in any Democratic Party leader who continued to support Mr. Lieberman, declaring that they “have an obligation” to support their nominee.

Including Wesley Clark, who called on Lieberman to quit the race yesterday, that brings the number of prominent Dems who've publicly demanded that Lieberman drop his independent bid to all of two. Will others follow?

There's one topic that hasn't been discussed yet.

Usually, after primary season, there is a candidate's debate between the major party winners of the primaries. I argue that if such a debate were to occur, Joe Lieberman shouldn't be invited. I've never known a candidate's debate to occur which included the loser of a major party primary.

Lieberman is about as popular right now as a staph infection at an Open Wound Festival. It shouldn't be the task of the major parties in Connecticut to insure that Lieberman gets time in front of cameras from here on out.

Dean and Clark may wanthim to withdraw, but Al From and Marshall Wittman (head honchos over at DLC) and Martin Peretz (the boss at The New Republic) have promised a Crusade for Joe.

....which is the equivalent of Barry Bonds suddenly doing public service announcements against steroids: Too little, too late and irrelevant.

Lieberman will be forced to drop out. Who's going to vote for him other than Republicans? Democrats won't vote for him now because his 'independent' candidacy means he'll be stealing a seat from the Democrats in the Senate--a seat that has been Democratic for decades. Why would ANY Democrat vote for him knowing that? It's a selfish, self-serving, arrogant candidacy. And, it's delusional: Lieberman says, if he wins he's going to 'caucus with the Democrats.' Is he completely daft? What Democrat would even speak to him after he steals a seat in the Senate from the Democrats?!

The man is clearly insane. I hope his family prevails upon him to give up these grandiose delusions before he embarrasses himself, and bankrupts them in the process. Of course, there is always the third-party payers who may back him (AIPAC) but the polls don't look too good right now. And, he doesn't have much time to turn his loserman image around. The country is 60% against the War in Iraq, and it's because it has failed; I think it will only get worse over the next few months. That won't help Lieberman's argument that "staying the course" is an option.

Lieberman will try to use this morning's terror plot arrests in the UK to argue that Iraq and the GWOT are linked, so therefore we must 'stay the course.' John Mercurio argued that this morning on Washington Journal. I think that's laughable; it proves that 'staying the course' in Iraq didn't protect Britain from a serious terror plot that was both 'imminent' and 'threatened casualties on an unimaginable scale.' So, why should the US continue to waste money, military resources, and American lives on Iraq, when we clearly need to spend that money and resources on protecting our own security at home?

Uh-oh! Run, everybody! The mighty Al From wades into the fray, wielding his unparalleled track record of electoral success!

Joe, it's time to make the announcement that you will support the Democratic Party and their candidate for Senate in November, because you need to 'spend more time with your family.'

If Lieberman doesn't drop out volentarily the next step should be to strip him of all seniority in the D's caucaus and make it clear that if he does win he will start at the very bottom as the newest Senator with no seniority and that he will only be appointed to the sub committeee on widgets for the post office.

The very idea that he could help torpedo the D's candinate and expect choice committeee assignments as a reward must be destroyed immediately.
