CO-07: DCCC Slams O'Donnell On Social Security In New Mailing
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today sent out a scorching direct-mail piece hammering Colorado GOP Congressional candidate Rick O'Donnell for wanting to "elimintate" Social Security. The piece -- a copy of which found its way into Election Central's inbox -- blisters O'Donnell over an article he recently admitted to writing which was entitled: "For Freedom's Sake, Eliminate Social Security." That sentence, unsurprisingly, is featured rather prominently in the mailing. View it below:
The DCCC declined to comment on the scope of the mailing, but a DCCC source tells Election Central that the piece went out today and was "dropped all across the district."
The DCCC source added that Dem strategists hoped to make O'Donnell's writings on Social Security a central issue of the race. "O'Donnell's out of touch stance on Social Security is going to be a massive liability throughout this campaign," the source said. "In our polling...people who were informed of O'Donnell's belief that Social Security is un-American and should be abolished were both appalled and horrified."
The mailing also quotes O'Donnell "in his own words" saying that "Social Security must be abolished" and that "it is time to slay the largest government `entitlement' program of all, Social Security." Experts generally rate the race for Colorado's 7th district a "toss-up." O'Donnell campaign officials were not available for comment. More from the mailing below.

For God's sake Rahm use this in every race. Bush has repeatedly said he'll try to privatize Social Security again next year. Jim McCrery the head of the Subcommitteee on Social Security in the Ways and Means Committee says the same thing. We should be demanding all Repub candidates repudiate those statements. This would absolutely kill guys like Peter Roskam in IL-06. He ducked out on the vote in the IL Senate on the SS protection resolution in May 2005. Didn't miss another vote that day but he must have been hiding in his office for that one.
Let's go after these guys.

Amen to that! That is what I have been saying for several months. Especially with all the workers who were affected by Enron-type chapter 11 bankruptcies that released their corporate employer's obligations for their pensions and health care. On top of that, you have all the workers that are afraid that that kind of thing could happen to them as well.
And that is a very large part of the electorate.
This is one issue that Democrats could run on nationwide.
Find the Truth. Do Justice.

What this post needs is a mention of the DEMOCRATIC candidate in the CO-7th- Ed Perlmutter.
We were in Colorado's 7th after Ed won the primary. My mother-in-law a diehard republican pissed us off on politics so much that day, that we got up, got in the rental car, drove around the corner and donated $50.00 to Ed's campaign. This is a very competitive district and I am surprised that many of the big name blogs aren't discussing it more (other than the apparantly mandatory O'Donnell is an anti-social security wingnut).

Third Rail of American Politics.
For people not of a certain age or living outside urban areas, the third rail is the high voltage line that drives the subway. Touch it and you die. Immediately and no questions asked. For decades that was true for Social Security to the point that it earned the above motto. Until the Cato Institute and the Heritage Association started a campaign of lies which can be pinpointed with precision. In Fall 1983 the Cato Journal published its Social Security issue Social Security: Continuing Crisis or Real Reform? and in it laid out in intricate and betraying detail exactly how they would take the deadly juice out of the Third Rail. In Butler and Germanis (warning PDF) they spell it out, and reading it will run a chill down your back. Every single Bush talking point on Social Security, every bit of tactics and strategy is spelled out Achieving Social Security Reform: A “Leninist” Strategy , And people like O'Donnell read it, nodded their heads and said "Yeah we can sell that"
Except that their numbers are crap. The only thing that troubles most Americans about Social Security is that they think its financing is in trouble. If they just understood that Social Security was in fact in perfectly fine shape (which it is - just ask me. Or visit the econoblogs. Or my site.) privatizers would discover that there is plenty of juice left in that Third Rail. We'll show that asshole 'un-American'. That kind of inviting smell of roasting meat wafting around? Its elephants who have inadvertently backed up onto Social Security's electrified Rail.
GOP Privatizers! Its What's for Dinner. (And I can't wait).
