CA-GOV: Schwarzenegger Dealing With Dems

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who's facing a tough re-election fight with state Treas. Phil Angelides, appears to have hit on a strategy for victory: He's essentially adopting virtually the entire Dem agenda in California, presumably to deprive Angelides of any issues to run on. Yesterday, for instance, Schwarzenegger compromised on the minimum wage with the Democratic Legislature. Today he followed that up with an agreement to lower the prices of prescription drugs.

While the former involved both sides giving in on certain points, the latter was a huge concession. So much so, in fact, that Democratic Senate President Pro Tem told the L.A. Times: "The governor's basically done everything the sponsors asked." Some commentators are seeing signs of Democratic weakness in the wage compromise-- an admission by Dems that they will lose the governor's race so they may as well squeeze Schwarzenegger for all they can. But it seems more likely to us that the GOP governor, well aware of the tough climate facing Republicans this November, is trying to suck all the air out of Angelildes' challenge.

Too bad Schwarzenegger only does things that benefit California during election years. It wasn't that long ago when he was trying to do the opposite of what he's done this year. If he gets reelected I wonder how long before he reverts back to Bush's manly man and starts calling Democrats "stooges" again.

Schwarzenegger is one of the most unprincipled politicians around. Too bad the media won't ask him if we should believe that election year "candidate Arnold" is the same as Governor Schwarzenegger.
