AZ-05: GOP Rep. Won't Condemn Vigilante Group Even Though It's Boycotting His State

The Minutemen -- you know, those whack-jobs who run around in night-goggles looking for illegal immigrants trying to cross the Mexican border -- are calling for a tourism and economic boycott of the state of Arizona because one of its senators wrote some immigration legislation that was too lenient for them.

GOP Rep. J.D. Hayworth represents part of the state of Arizona. So you'd think he'd denounce the Minutemen for trying to hurt his home state. Wouldn't you?

Well, Hayworth -- a longtime friend of the group -- hasn't uttered a word of condemnation. And his Democratic opponent, Harry Mitchell, is wondering why Heyworth values the Minutemen more than he values his own state. More after the jump.

If you're wondering what the boycott is all about, Minuteman Barry Weinstein explains it here in Human Events:

Economic chaos is now very likely for Arizona and Massachusetts. Why? Tourism is a substantial economic boon for these two states. The American natives are no longer merely restless; they’re intentions are now confluent.

The millions of Americans opposed to the Senate's bill -- granting amnesty for lawbreakers -- will not be touring Arizona or Massachusetts until the misleading actors, Senators John McCain (R.-Ariz.) and Teddy Kennedy (D.-Mass.), are removed from office. Tourism counts as the second largest income producer for their states. "We the people" will now vote them out of office with our wallets.

Here's where it gets interesting. The Minutemen aren't calling for a complete boycott. There's one part of the state that they want exempted from it. Want to guess which one it is?

Finally, in Arizona's Maricopa County resides a "Super" Sheriff. His name is Joe Arpaio and he arrests illegal foreigners captured in the county. Therefore, this boycott must not be imposed against his county. So, should anyone wish to tour Arizona, please, only go to Maricopa County. Spend money there!

Yes, J.D. Hayworth's district is in Maricopa County! So maybe that explains why Hayworth isn't troubled by the boycott. But as Mitchell wonders, shouldn't Hayworth care about the economic health of his entire state?
