AZ-01: Mud Flies In Nasty Dem Primary
The Democratic primary to replace Rick Renzi is getting dirty and very, very nasty -- but it doesn't have much to do with politics. Last month, frontrunner Ellen Simon's husband's ex-wife (stay with us here, it's worth it) accused Simon and her husband of ducking child support on Simon's primary opponent's blog and on a local politics site.
Now Simon, a former lawyer for the ACLU, is suing the ex-wife, Pamela Tanner, for libel. More of the nastiness after the jump.
Simon's opponent, Mike Caccioppoli, weighed in on his blog:
I am absolutely disgusted that Ellen Simon has filed a lawsuit against someone for posting a comment on my blog that is critical of her . . . For someone who worked for the ACLU to sue someone for exercising their freedom of speech on a blog that is for the free and open exchange of ideas and opinions is beyond grotesque.The AZ GOP, which has been pushing this story for months now?, (their site describes Simon as having "more baggage than a Holiday Inn") is thrilled. They probably think this scandal will distract voters from Renzi's dirty laundry. Unfortunately, they're probably right.
