IN-08: With the Local Paper of Record on the Trail, Candidates Are Kept in Check
On Friday, the Evansville Courier & Press reported that Rep. John Hostettler (R) and his challenger Vanderburgh County sheriff Brad Ellsworth’s (D) television advertisements are factually misleading.
Today the Courier & Press opines that it plans to follow up with future reports on the candidates’ shenanigans. The decision by the paper to take an active role in fact checking the candidates may give voters a fighting chance to understand a race in the district that locals refer to as the “Bloody Eighth.”
The most recent ads suggested that Ellsworth should have done more to prevent the accidental release of a child molester from his jail and alleged that Hostettler voted against funding local law enforcement.
Such ads appear likely to continue. Both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee (RCCC) plan to inject money into the race.
The DCCC has made Ellsworth a member of its Red to Blue Program, which provides extra support to candidates. And the RCCC plans to fund advertisements in the district, since Hostettler has historically preferred to run a grass-roots campaign and raised very little money.
