GA-GOV: Republican Incumbent “Big Buddy” Enjoys Huge Cash Advantage
Whichever Democrat wins the July 19 Georgia gubernatorial primary, he or she will be significantly behind in fundraising for the general election.
In the fundraising period that ended June 30, Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) raised $2,057,501 and spent $1,262,813, leaving him with $9,058,817 cash on hand.
Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor (D) raised $1,338,924, spent $4,393,716 and was left with $1,127,634 in the period. His fellow Democratic candidate, Secretary of State Cathy Cox, raised a similar $1,286,321, spent $3,719,026 and was left with only $560,379.
As these numbers make clear, not only are the Democrats individually raising less money than Perdue, they are also spending considerably more money in the primary to fight each other through television advertisements. Cox is especially vulnerable, if she wins, given that she currently has 1/18 of the cash as “Big Buddy.”
