CT-SEN: The Connecticut For Lieberman Party Off to a Rocky Start
Should he lose the primary, Joe Lieberman will run under the Connecticut for Lieberman party. He filed his papers yesterday. For now, the party will collect signatures so it can appear on the general election ballot. The Courant explains that forming a new party, rather than petitioning as an individual, saves Lieberman from sharing a line with “fringe” candidates.
For a viewpoint outside both parties (the Democrats and the Connecticut for Liebermanites), here’s what David Frum has to say about the news. Basically, he likes Lieberman but wouldn’t mind seeing him go down because it could help the GOP (and the war, and the Republic, of course). “His defeat would hand Republicans a vivid symbol of what the Democratic party is evolving into,” Frum argues. “Can Rick Santorum use that talking point? I bet he can.”
The Courant article ends with a recap of Lieberman’s bumper sticker snafu. The Connecticut Post picked up on it too. The Post quotes the Lieberman campaign defending the fabricated slogan as a “metaphor” for Lamont’s strategy.
Ned Lamont responded to the ad with his own, a humorous look at negative campaigning. Lamont even sings (“Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by Wang Chung, and not very well). Watch it on YouTube, the power of which Howard Kurtz wrote about yesterday.
Joe Biden was supposed to appear with Lieberman yesterday afternoon at an Irish pub event for Stamford Irish Democrats, but he apparently missed his train. See Joe drink Guinness and dodge questions about the primary here (or read about it here).
