PA: Pennsylvanians Pick Hillary and Rudy

Incumbent governor Ed Rendell (D) is safe but Senator Rick Santorum (R) is not, according to a Strategic Vision poll of likely voters that came out today. If the election were held today, Rendell (D) would beat Lynn Swann (R) 49% to 38%, and challenger Bob Casey (D) would beat Santorum 49% to 40%. Rendell would win even though more voters were favorable towards Swann—50% vs. 46%.

The poll also asked Pennsylvanians their presidential choices. Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton came in first, with 33%. Al Gore, who is constantly saying he doesn’t plan to run, came in second with 18%. John Edwards came in third with 14% and Russ Feingold was a distant fourth with 6%. John Kerry was close behind him with 5%, followed by Mark Warner and Wesley Clark who tied with 2%.

Rudolph Guiliani topped the list for Republicans with 39% of participants. He was followed by John McCain (R-AZ), who received 28%. Newt Gingrich (R-GA) and Mitt Romney (R-MA) tied for third, but with only 5%. If Giuliani was excluded, McCain went up to 41% and Romney came in a very distant second with 9%. Gingrich followed him with 7%. When Condoleezza Rice was included, she took 11% of the vote.

Asked about the President, 24% of respondents approved of the job he was doing. 66% disapproved.
