MT-SEN: NRSC Attacks Tester’s (Lack of) Hair

It’s hard to imagine Saturday Night Live coming up with a more absurd spoof than the current round of television and radio ads launched by the National Republican Senatorial Committee in Montana this week against Democratic Senate candidate Jon Tester.

Tester is running neck and neck with incumbent Senator Conrad Burns (R), who is seen as vulnerable due to his connections with Jack Abramoff.

In the NRSC ads, a fake barber attacks Tester for supporting gay marriage and flag burning. The ads go on to question Tester’s choice of haircut, a buzz, calling it “conservative,” while labeling Tester a “liberal.” But they do not stop there.

In the television version of the ad, the barber says of Tester, "Didn't leave a tip, either." In the radio ad, the barber says, "didn't leave much of a tip, either."

Tester’s real barber, Bill Graves, who has cut Tester’s hair for 15 years, tells the Great Falls Tribune, however, that Tester does in fact tip generously.

The attack ads come as the NRSC attempts to label Tester an “admitted law breaker.” The label refers to Tester’s admission that he used a pre-recorded telephone campaign call last year. Such calls are illegal in Montana, but Tester has said the law is unconstitutional and Republicans have used such tactics in the past, as well.

Tester plans to respond to the NRSC ad with an ad of his own featuring Graves and a real barbershop.
