CT-SEN: Lieberman's Bear Attack

In 1988, Joe Lieberman ran a campaign ad casting his opponent, Sen. Lowell Weicker Jr., as a bear who snored through crucial Senate votes. Now that Weicker is raising money for Ned Lamont’s primary challenge, Lieberman has brought the bear back. In a new cartoon ad, a large brown bear (Weicker) forces a high-voiced cub in a pink polo shirt (Lamont) to go after Lieberman because he’s too lazy to do it himself. "One thing about cubs; they always do what they are told," the ad concludes. You really should watch the ad yourself here.

Lamont has plenty of his own videos over a YouTube.com, including ads, footage of his appearances and clips made by his supporters. Lieberman’s bear ad is on the site too; a Lamont supporter has labeled it “incredibly creepy.”

The Lizard of the Senate's in big trouble. Running garbage ads (not very good ones at that) against a non-candidate? He's afraid, he's very afraid.

And that's good. Very good.

I found it ironic that the bear cub (Lamont) says "but I agree with Republicans 80% of the time". Is the candidate's agreement with Republicans really an area that Lieberman wants to get into?

As Josh said, this looks to be Rovian. Kind of like the Republican attacks in '04 on Kerry's military service, an area where their candidate was clearly weaker on paper.

Well, maybe Lieberman wants to know why Lamont "gets it wrong," 20% of the time.

Lieberman's lost his mind. It would be so fun to watch him lose this primary.

In all the criticisms of Lieberman I've read, few mention that he chaired the FEMA confirmation hearings of Joe Albaugh and Michael Brown.

During the aftermath of Katrina, I wondered who okayed Brown's appointment to FEMA. I thought the senators who confirmed his appointment should be held as accountable as anyone for the FEMA fiasco.

It took a while but eventually I found a transcript and a video of Michael Brown's hearing on the Senate website. It was a joke. At least all Lieberman seemed to do was crack lame jokes. Lots of bon homie but nothing of substance.

Maybe someone could use clips from the video for a Lamont commercial. ...

OK...so the ad is bad.  But it worked in '88 the first time 'round. (rolling eyes)

I have no idea why he went with THAT ad.  He has a solid track record as a CT Atty General...a US Senator (who was instrumental in saving the sub base)...and a VP candidate.  Why not try to highlight some of those things rather then some high school quality cutesy ad?  If you are going to do an attack ad do an ATTACK AD...if you want to make people smile don't do silly, embarassing ads...highlight your record.  Besides he is the incumbent let Lamont go negative first.  The way I see it his VERY WEAK attempt to go negative sends one of two possible messages...either he is panicked or he prefers to run this fall as an independant.

Yep...I don't get it at all...and I kinda like Lieberman

A Nutmegger friend writes:

 WRT Connecticut and Lieberman:

First off, our appointed Republican Governor (after the Rowland scandal), Jodi Rell is very popular and she's more than likely to win. Liberman is trying to scare Democrats into voting for him by implying that Rell's popularity will diminish Lamont's chances. Lieberman is also supported by a very large well-healed pro-Israeli crowd in Fairfiled county (the Gold Coast) and in the Greater Hartford Area.

Nevertheless the non-Jewish, liberal back-lash here is huge and there are a lot more nutmeggers eager to vote against Liberman in tha primary on August 8th.

And Liberman is getting desperate and making mistakes. See this: Lamont Tagged By `Bear' Spot Lieberman Campaign Portrays Challenger As Agent Of Weicker

If Lamont wins on the eighth, Lieberman's ego will bruise "big time" and if he runs as an independent, all will rest on the quality of the GOP Senate candidate.

My personal feeling is that turnout in the Fall election will be very light. If Lieberman loses the primary, there will be a lot of party pressure for him to let Lamont have his day and not act as a spoiler–especially if the Republicans find a credible candidate.

But people here are really pissed and disgusted with most of our representation in Washington, save for John Larson, who seems to be the only one here who hasn't forgotten he's a Democrat.

If the Lion of the Knesset, Lizard of the Senate loses, bet Ken Mehlman's on the phone - "we'll fund an Indy run and if you lose, you get Sec Def"...if he hasn't made the call already
